Refrigerator Features
The first consideration is deciding if you want the convenience of a water, ice, refreshment center found in most side by sides. If you have children constantly opening the door for a drink of cold water or ice for their soda, you may want to consider this a necessity. You will save electricity in the long run as the refrigerator door will be opened less. Some also include water filters and filter change reminders. Top mount models include water dispensers and filters as well, but you will have to open the door to quench your thirst, negating the energy saving perks of an outside dispenser.
Look for spill proof glass shelves (rather than the metal grates), and shelves that conveniently raise and lower. Many new models have a mini elevator apparatus so you don't have to clean off the shelf to move it and make more space for that large ham you just bought. If you buy a lot of fresh meat, make sure you find a model that includes a temperature controlled meat drawer.
Some refrigerators claim a quiet run. Pay attention to those if your appliance is in a room that is the hub of other activities, such as homework or TV viewing. LG is noted for a quiet compressor, but it can add to the final cost of the refrigerator.
