how do you decide when to let one go?

Hi there.  I was just in a thrift shop and found an Electrolux Discovery for 14 dollars!  It was very clean and even came with a hose.  I didn't buy it because I am saving for a newer car and need to exercise self control instead of impulse buying.  I know vacuums will always be available, but to have walked away from that machine for that price I could just kick myself.  How do you decide whether or not to get a particular vac that you come across.  Thanks!
