What's for sale in the vacuum department.  Not much of anything in the week leading up to the 4th of July and the official kickoff of summer.  But here goes:  Winners and losers.  Neither and all.

BEST BUY finally advertises and adds free gift cards from $10 to $75.  Of course the value depends on the make/model.  BISSELL bagless Momentum upright for $99 and $10 free giftcard; BISSELL Cleanview 11 bagless upright for $84 and $15 giftcard; EUREKA bagged SmartVac upright with power paw $149, no card but free filtrette bags ($13 value); HOOVER WT bagless upright with washable teflon HEPA filter for $159 and $25 giftcard; BISSELL ProHeat 2X Steam Cleaner $199 and Pet Stain/Odor remover ($13 value) and finally dyson DC17 Animal for $549 with $75 giftcard.

BEST BUY doesn't get kudos for its vacuums and sales but does for its Fisher Houses.  Helping injured US military members with technology to keep them connected with their loved ones and families.  Partnering with Sony, Toshiba, Samsung and Nintendo.

CIRCUIT CITY has the HOOVER Elite bagless upright for $99; dyson DC14 for $429 and the IRobot Discovery for $$279 with free Dirt Dog IRobot ($129 value).

KMart has the HOOVER Steam Cleaner for $179 with Cleaning Solution (valued at $15); BISSELL bagless Velocity upright for $119; Dirt Devil Vision bagless cann for $89; and Eureka Boss bagless mini-upright for $37.

Linens-n-Things offers 20 percent off coupon good thru July 4.  No vacuums on sale but all eligible for the discount.

Finally, ORECK passed on the Sunday ads but went for the Weeklies with the XL21 top of the line.

My advice: Hold out for the sales next week.  Should be better prices and possibly some new offerings too.

Quote from Carmine_Difazio on 06/15/07 at 6:46pm:
Expect to see 2 more bagless upright vacuums on store shelves.  The Dirt Devil i-vacuum for $250 with a 5 year warranty.  HEPA, permament washable filters.  11 foot hose reach.  Power tool on board.  Shroud and bin completely washable.  Easy bottom bin dump.  Cord winder.  Finger tip controls.  Decent brush roll.  Looks amazingly like the VAX and Siemens.

Starting to be advertised on TV: Yesterday evening: ACCESS HOLLYWOOD.  No price mentioned.  But nice TV ad.  Issue: Can DD sell itself to US consumers as a $250 vacuum cleaner?

New HOOVER lightweight bagless upright/stick vacuum called the Nano-lite.  12 amp. 20 foot cord.  Attachments on board. Brush on-off pedal.  12 pounds.  Handle folds down.  One year unconditional guarantee on entire vacuum.  MSRP about $50.  Not on the HOOVER Web site yet.

Competes with Eureka Optima and Dirt Devil lightweights.

Does not have a turbo tool!

I do not care for the dustbin and filter placement on the Nano-lite.  More dirt is going to block the filter quicker compared to a pleated circular filter or a filter outside of the dirt bin.

The handle is telescopic and does not fold down.

You're right on the handle.  I believe there is a handle grip holder on the bottom of the bin housing for doing steps.

I'm guessing the filter is washable/teflon coated.  But I have not seen the nanolite up close and personal so I don't know for sure.  Still not on the HOOVER website.

Well with July 4th sales this week, let's take a look at what's up for vacuums.

First, the no shows and no goes:  BEST BUY and Circuit City have nada for vacuums for sale for the week.  Unusual?  Yes, I'd say so.

ORECK passed on the Sunday ads but continues to hit the weeklies with its XL Classic for $299.  3 year warranty, cordless iron, compact canister.  And Dave dressed in an Uncle Sam's red white and blue top hat.  Also announcing that North Las Vegas already the home to 2 ORECK Clean Home Centers will be opening a third soon.

TARGET has its usual array of suspects and a newbie:  The dyson lite DC18 for $469 and a free $50 Giftcard with purchase.  I think TARGET will up that to $100 by Labor Day and trust me, there's no shortage of dyson vacuums on the shelves.  (BTW, it appears that TARGET ads have not made amends for the recent ASA ruling ordering dyson to tone down its claim to shame: NEVER CLOGS, NEVER LOSES SUCTION.  Wrong.  And TARGET is still claiming it.  Also added to the TARGET ads is the HOOVER Elite bagless upright (newbie for TARGET) at $129 and a free $20 TARGET Giftcard.  The EUREKA Altima bagless uprigt for $75, Dirt Devil Featherlite bagless upright for $45 AND the Eureka Quick-up hand-stick vacuum for $24.

KMart has the Kenmore bagless Quick-Clean for $69; the Kenmore bagged compact cann for $39 (BTW this cheapie has a cordwinder too); Dirt Devil bagless swift stick vacuum for $19; Dirt Devil rechargeable bagless broom for $44 and the Dirt Devil Easy Steamer for $89 with Carpet Shampoo free.

KOHL's has 10-33 percent off on selected floorcare.  Like the HOOVER EmPower for $79 and BISSELL Power Steamer for $99.  Have to check local stores for sale brands, models, and discounts.

Linens-n-Things has its 20 percent coupon good through July 22, 2007 including all dyson vacuums.  LNT Web Site has the dyson DC21 Stowaway canister for $499 (plus free shipping) before 20 percent off and DC18 dyson-lite (plus free shipping) before 20 percent off.  Pretty nice savings for all the dyson fawners.  The 20 off has to have the big box store retailers like BEST BUY, Circuit City, and SEARS seeing "red."  Literally.  Why?  Because it costs them in lost dyson sales unless of course they meet the lower prices which then costs them in lost profits.  Looks like this week's Supreme Court ruling on retail price fixing isn't having any effect yet.

And finally the week's winner: HOME DEPOT with the dyson DC14 All Floors for $429 and DC17 Absolute Animal for $549.  What's so good about these items and prices?  Well if you buy ANY DYSON FLOORCARE PRODUCT OVER $397 with the HOME DEPOT Credit Card (I have one doesn't everybody?) between June 28 and July 8, you receive a $100 Giftcard by mail in rebate to HOME DEPOT.  And HD's dyson ad conforms to the ASA ruling: NO mention of NEVER CLOGS, NEVER LOSES SUCTION.  Instead:  HD ad says "most powerful upright for pet hair" for the DC17 Aboslute Animal and "easy trigger activated dust bin" for the DC14.

I don't particularly like mail in rebates and Gift Cards--takes too long.  And this is a repeat of a similar offer KOHL's had for dyson sales on Memorial Day vacuum purchases.  The question I have is: Who pays for the Gift Card?  KOHL's, HD, and/or dyson and/or both.  The latter is something us old timers in the industry call "co-op."   I'm betting it's the latter.  Both pay a part and the mail-in-rebates are the paper trail HD (Kohl's) uses for dyson to ante up.

There you have it.  HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY and Birthday to the good ole USA.

R C Willey (supposedly the largest retailer of furniture, electronics, appliances, and flooring in the South West) is giving away a new HOOVER Tempo upright vacuum with any new carpet purchase $999 or higher.  Special edition--Red.

http://www.rcwilley.com/ads/V2007070520070708cp.pdf

One of my favorite HOOVER upright vacuums for the money--about $70 retail--and consistently rated in the top 10 best vacuums by Consumer Reports year after year.

BTW, RC Willey stores and Web Site carry the full line of HOOVER vacuums and parts.  Other major vacuum brands carried by RC Willey besides HOOVER and to a lesser extent than HOOVER: BISSELL, dyson and Panasonic.

For dyson buyers, Overstock.com has discounted prices from MSRP (more than dyson MAP allows for advertising) on old models:

There's one caveat about - overstock.com.  Many of their Dysons are refurbished returns with 180 day warranties.  One doesn't know why the vacuums were returned.  Were they a poor fit due to the carpet type?  Were they defective?  Did they clean poorly?  Or simply buyer's regret?   Hopefully the next vacuum review issue of Consumer Reports (fall 2007) will have some data on Dyson's reliability.
