Carmine,
If you are going to treat yourself to a Father's day present.  Make it one of those Robomowers.  There are several people in my city that have them, there was even a newspaper article last Saturday.   The humans that live with "Herbie" say that at first he was great entertainment, people came over to watch him mow (which he does daily, and recharges himself when needed).    They said the hardest part was getting  the paramiters set at first, after that they just don't worry about the mowing anylonger.

As far as Vacs, for my new move, I want a light weight to do quick work around the house.  I am strongly leaning towards the Simplicity Freedom I spoke of on another thread.

Real grass is non-existent in the new building developments in North Las Vegas.  Nevada even encourages older home owners and buyers to substitute "desert landscape" for grass by offering tax credits and reductions.  Water is in short supply.

The only place in Del Webb Sun City Aliante with luxurious beautiful looking real grass is the golf course.  And I don't play.   Wink  And it can cost $10,000-$40,000 MORE for a house that is on the 18 hole Golf Course.  Not for me.  I'm one row of houses away on 2 sides around.  Don't want all those stray golfers and balls littering up my nice desert landscape and upsetting my dog while she is napping.

I used to live on the back part of Rolling Hills Golf Course.  You are right about the stray balls.  More than a few windows got whacked during the time I lived there.  Not to mention all the strays that ended up getting under my mower.

I have some friends in Phoenix, they too are encouraged to do desert scapes.  Oh, well with no grass to mow,  it give you more time to vacuum.  Is most of your vac bag contents comprised of sand?   I am just assuming, that is being in the desert.   That is besides the pet hair you frequently speak of.

I don't miss mowing, although I always had a contract with my grass.  It grows, I cut it.  Nothing more.  No water, no fertilizer, no weeding.  Waste of time and money.  Much rather grow flowers, plants and veggies.

The biggest component of the bag is pet hair by far, next just the ordinary dust and dirt, then fine grit and sand.

New houses are built airtight and well-insulated.  Especially the area under the slate covered roofs.  Plus we added sunscreens to all the windows in the house (in addition to the existing storms-screens) to reduce heat, wind, and sand from coming into the window openings.

Wind is the weather issue mostly.  Not uncommon for sustained gusts of 25 miles per hour.  And higher.  On the plus side, hot temps for sun worshippers with very low humidity.  For example it was 97 degrees recently in Woodbridge VA with 97 percent humidity.  Unbearable for people and pets.  Vice the same temp here in LV with 9 percent humidity.  Double digit humidity here is very uncommon.  Vice the 80-90 percent and more for the Washington Metro area which includes Northern Virginia.   No doubt correlated to the times that the gang of 535 are in session across the Potomac River.   Wink

Too funny O/T.  I did eat some, but really gave most veggies away to friends, family, and neighbors.  Just like the pears, peaches, and figs.  And grapes.  Even made my own tomato seeds and plants and had the experts from Rutgers University come out to marvel at their size and weight.  Wink

Here in Vegas the HOA frown on gardens and plants unless strictly authorized and approved.  I miss the garden.

In my part of the world, Kansas, that isn't a wind that's a gentle breeze.   I live on a reclaimed sand pit, and besides the pet hair I get lots and lots of fine sand that is tracked in.

Hey Carmine,

I was in my local Best Buy last night.  They've put the Dyson "Slim Jim" display right out on a main aisle just before the Floor Care aisle and the Euro Pro uprights have disappeared.  Have I missed something?

The Dyson "Stowaway" canister also seems to have replaced the bagged Electyrolux that was on display though the bagless version remains.

Thanks,

Venson

Hello Venson:

No, I think you are seeing your local BEST BUY store trying to do everything it can to push new dysons with every ounce of its being.  The key to BB's success is the dyson prices.  If they stay at MSRP, the dysons at BB won't sell.  Why?  Too many retailers now are offering ongoing discounts on dysons of at least 20 percent.  BEST BUY has to do the same and/or better to compete.

Some retailers have already begun assessing their complete venue of vacuum products and will make changes.  BEST BUY has a special relationship with dyson because it convinced James to launch his vacuum line in the USA in April 2002 ahead of his planned schedule.  Other retailers are not so loyal and not wedded to dyson in the same way.  Sell or perish.

I would think that with how competetive this industry is, the box stores are only looking at the same stuff it always had, only at a better price and who gives them the best deal. The brands that box stores sell are pretty much the same.Yes even dyson, now that that the cats out of the bag,if you know what i mean.

The indy's are in a very nice position to put some real heat on these box stores, the playing field has leveled out.

It's a industry wide consensus that box store are not the venue for vacuums that cost more than 300.00 plus.
