How is Wal*Mart doing with sales of the dyson DC07 Original for $378 with a 2 year warranty?

Carmine D.

Sam's Club Stores reduced the price on the dyson DC14 Total Clean from $459 to $399.  With a 5 Year Warranty.  Wal*Mart and dyson are "dissing" the hoi polloi who would be inclined to shop at Wal*Mart and buy a dyson vacuum.

Hi,

Though I had recommended a Kenmore Iridium, a friend of mine in Florida has ended up with a Dyson -- her husband's idea.  It performs well enough but she doesn't "love" it.  What influenced her husband toward the purchase was a promo going on that somehow contributes a rebate to a college fund for the kids.  I don't whether this promo is generated by the vendor or the manufacturer but has anyone heard of this recently?

Hello Venson:

An excerpt from recent posts by M00seUK and Dyson Chris about dyson's launch of the DC18 and DC21 in Montreal, Quebec.  The author of the excerpt is James Dyson explaining how the promo works in Canada:

"Dyson Canada has grown to become Dyson's fastest growing subsidiary worldwide," confirmed James Dyson founder and the inventor of the company's patented cyclone technology. Dyson was in town to celebrate the company's anniversary and to launch a design award for Canadian design and engineering students.

"My hope is that the Dyson Canada Design Competition will encourage young Canadian designers and engineers to think differently about how to find innovative solutions to every day problems - and will encourage and inspire our next generation of designers," said Dyson, who famously made thousands of design prototypes in his quest to develop the Dyson vacuum.

The Dyson Canada Design Competition is open to Canadian design teams and individuals who are full-time students or who have recently graduated (within one year) from a recognized college, CEGEP or Canadian university. The company will accept design submissions from March 1 through to November 15, 2007 and application information is online at www.dyson.com.

The winner of the Dyson Canada Design Competition will receive $5,000 in cash; an award, and a Dyson vacuum cleaner. The Canadian winner will be entered into the international James Dyson Design Award, with a prize fund of up to 10,000 pounds sterling."

Dyson is worried about the lack of engineering students in some countries throughout the world.  He is starting an engineering school in the UK for high school and/or college students which I believe is suppose to be completed soon (2008).  The engineering scholarship complements the school and encourages more students to pursue engineering backgrounds.  Although in today's world, dyson may want to be more generous with the student scholarship amounts.

And now begins the season of many unhappy returns.

At least 1 in 3 US consumers is expected to return one gift from the holiday season.  Return fraud costs retailers $9.6 BILLION per year and $3.5 BILLION occurring over the holidays.

To combat the problem big box retailers are tightening their return and refund policies.  This means more hassles and/or restrictions.  Retailers are shortening return periods, charging substantial restock fees for boxed items, setting amount limits on returns by customer, and offering no refunds.  The liberal return policies are fading away according to Edgar Dworsky, founder of ConsumerWorld.org, a Massachusetts consumer guide.

Nordstrom did away with the return policy altogether.  John Bailey, a spokesman for Nordstrom in Seattle, said the company handles returns case by case.  Nordstrom says it builds customer loyalty by not having a return policy.

Carmine D.

COSTCO Wholesale Corp has altered its return policy, aiming to alleviate the squeeze put on its profit margins by customers bringing back consumer electronics for full refunds.

COSTCO will roll out the revamped policies in its 482 US locations over the next five weeks.  The change limits to 90 days the time frame in which customers can return various consumer electronics for a full refund.  This is a change from the unlimited grace period to return purchases for a full refund (the only exception has been the six-month deadline for computers).

The unlimited time frame still applies to COSTCO merchandise other than consumer electronics.  Some say even with the change COSTCO has the best return policy in the retail industry.

COSTCO estimates that returns of consumer electronics pared eight cents a share from earnings last year when the company reported earnings of $2.30 per share.

COSTCO also introduced an 800 number that customers can call to get answers to technical questions about their purchases.

COSTCO Execs forecast that the number of stores in the US will double by 2010.

The number ONE choice this week among all the big box retailers is dyson and in particular the DC07 All Floors.  BEST BUY, Circuit City, Target, and Linens-n-Things all have this vintage 5 year old dyson for $399.  But LNT and Bed Bath and Beyond are offering 20 percent off discount coupons through March 18 and 26 respectively.  And LNT will throw in a $50 Gift Card.  What's next?

If the DC07 All Floors is not your style, LNT also has the DC07 Animal for $499 and the DC15 Ball All Floors for $499.  But take advantage of the 20 discount and $50 Gift Card.

Dave does it yet again.  PARADE 3/4 page color ad.  With a young lady hugging her Oreck XL Ultra.  Last week it was White and Blue trim, this week it's black and blue trim.  With the usual giveaways and 30 days, risk free in home trial.  And a small photo of Dave with the words: "Nothing gets by an Oreck."  You go Dave.  And that's not all.  Section A of the Sunday newspaper, 1/4 page b/w ad for the Classic XL for $299.

Tauting Microban technology and using one third the electricity of any other vacuum brand which could save hundreds of dollars in energy costs over the life of the vacuum.  And odds are a vacuum user will go through three other vacuums in the time that they own an Oreck XL Ultra.  (Both claims are Dave's not mine). 10 year Warranty, 10 free annual services.

For the Classic XL, $299 with a 3 year warranty and Cordless iron and 5 pound compact canister.  With the 30 days risk free in home trial.

As I stroll the neighborhoods of our 3400 dwellings at the Del Webb Community here in Sun City Aliante (not Sin City) I see over and over again 2 floorcare products in the garages: Oreck uprights and HOOVER Floormates.  Even an occasional HOOVER Agility.  I ask the homeowners (we old timers all love to sit out in the sun and/or walk our 4 legged friends) if they use their Oreck vacuums and HOOVER floor washers and what they think?  Resounding "yeses" with "for years and years" and the best home product we ever purchased.  After I leave, I'm sure they say:  "Who was that grey haired man?"  He can't be David Oreck.  David Oreck is bald.  Can't be James Dyson?  He's a brit?  Or is he?

Hello Venson, OldTimer:

Funny you should ask.  I'm thinking about a mobile vacuum shop to repair and sell.  Parts and service for all makes and models.  Do the quick repairs right in my truck on location in the neighborhoods.  The harder ones (if I don't have the parts on hand in the truck) in the garage at home.  Send out mailers to the areas I plan to canvass with my drive through times.  Tell the people to be on the look out for my vacuum service truck when I'm in their area.

I think this retirement community in Las Vegas is ideal for it.  Any thoughts?

Mobile repair's done for other services  (car repair, pet shampooing, locksmith, plumbing).  So why not for vacuums ?

Yup, just like Venson said...
Interesting how various retailers pick up a new model and then close it out after a short time.

Interesting approach by Kohl's, noted for overly inflating regular every day prices.  Mark up the MSRP ridiculously high, then run sales with mark downs up to 1/3.  Then offer an additional 15 percent off.

Even with the smoke, mirrors and subterfuge, the DC07 All Floors comes to $256 and the DC07 Animal $324.  With a 5 year warranty, sure beats the dyson DC07 Original at Wal*Mart for $378 with a 2 year warranty.
