chains on snowblowers
Original Message   Mar 18, 2005 2:40 am
What are your thoughts on putting chains on snowblowers.  I have an 8hp Ariens and thought they might help on hills.  This site is great,  actually the people using it make it great.  Thanks for your help on a previous problem.

I just got an 11hp Ariens (1985) with chains on it. It gets great traction but I was thinking about changing the tires to Snow-Hogs because the chains hack up the driveway. Also, my tires are very cracked so it looks like I'll have to get new ones soon anyway.

I have an old Ariens (with chains). They work well but are hard on the pavement when turning.

I have an older snowblower  without the snowhogs.     Although it does have an agressive tread.    I tried it without chains but found I lost too much traction on inclines.  i put the chians back on.    I agree with the others it chains mark up the driveway. But my pavemwnt is crapy anyway, full of heaves cracks etc. If i had a nice driveway i would look into snowhogs. My neighbors all have them and have no traction issues at all.

I put chains on almost everything in the winter, my tractors, my truck, and if I could find a set to fit, I'd put them on my car.  My driveway is gravel, except in the winter when it is ice. I'm tried of getting stuck in my own driveway, so about 8 years ago, I bought chains for the truck (the tractors already had them) I've even got chains for my Troy-Bilt tiller for when I use the front blade. I guess you could say I'm in favor of having tire chains on all things, because it beats the heck out of digging out stuck equipment.
