IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN HONDA ENGINES?
Original Message   Jul 30, 2010 9:37 pm
The biggest snow blower HONDA makes is there 1132- it has a gx340 engine. I herd they did something to it for use on there snow blowers for ease of winter starting. Bottom line I want one , to put it on my Ariens- 924DLE. I herd from Honda that I cant buy one unless I buy one of there Snowblowers- The ones I see on line are not for snow- WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Does anyone have a good part or model number?

You don't need to buy a Honda engine from the Honda dealership.  Check out Small Engine Warehouse on line.  They have a great selection of small engines.

The biggest difference between a snow thrower engine and other OPE engines is the air intake system.  Air filters are removed because they're not needed and a carb/air cowling is installed on the snow engine to keep carb and intake air warmed up to keep the carb from icing up.   If you are mechanically inclined, you could probably build some sort of cowling to duct warm air from the engine to the carb area.

There more to it than just dropping another engine onto a snow thrower of a different make.   The bolt pattern is a concern.  The height of the power output shaft has to be considered.  The type and size of the output shaft must fit the pulley(s) and the output pulley(s) have to line up with the impeller and drive wheel pulleys.   Then there's the control rods and cables that have to be routed around the engine as well as sufficient clearance between engine and the chute.  Lots of stuff to figure out before dropping in a different engine.
