The problem with heating the cable is you can take the temper off the steel ( soften it, it may bend off the Z over time), also you take away the corrosion protection of the cable.
Get the Z bend bar tool, you will enjoy it.
I always cut the outer cable with a small fine triangle file, that way I could cut almost through the outer cable and "twist and snap" the outer housing off. This way the inner cable was not nicked or scratched.
The cable kit we had a smudge pot type of solder unit, It wasn't very big but it sat on the table and would not knock over and spill, I don't know about the handheld unit, it might be portable, but it takes a while to heat up. I would hate to have to hold it the whole time and not spill it on myself while working with it..
Niper, If you are going to get a kit be sure that you get one that is made more for lawn stuff and the cable size needed, the one I posted Is for motorcycles (I think). That cable kit pays for itself in just a few times of use. The kit also allows you to use "New Old Stock" that is not selling, because you can adjust sizes and ends on existing cables you have already.. Plus the added benifit of not having to special order a cable for something you are not a dealer for (at almost list price + shipping ) and trying to make a buck on it still..
Alright, Buy that stuff and tell me later how much you like it,
Good Luck,
