ariens 924 8 hp snowblower
Original Message   Dec 16, 2005 3:09 am
need basic carb specs and recommended  no load high rpm setting. engine runs fairly well but coughs or hickups a bit at high rpm. float level is 7/32 when inverted main jet is further out than 1 1/2 turns( 2 1/2 i'd guess) and mixture screw is very close to 1 turn. have some questions on governor linkage .what is the proper adjustment for the rod between the throttle shaft  plate and governor link ? the rod on the carb end is in the second hole in from the clossest side of the plate facing the governor, is this correct? i guess i know the theory on this but i don't know how to set it up right.it is an 8 hp horizontal shaft tecumseh with a type three tecumseh carb. the one that has the single screw holding the carb butterfly on. any carb specs and adjustment info would be greatly appreciated. i'm thinking about taking the carb back off and thourghly cleaning it but would like to know the specifics on what is critical to get cleaned before doing so. thanks mkd55

The correct float setting is 11/64". Your 7/32" would be 14/64" so you aren't too far off, but I would set it to the factory spec of 11/64". It almost sounds like your carb is running lean - did you clean the bowl nut holes? Mixture screw bench settings - for IDLE mixture turn screw lightly until it bottoms & back out one turn, HI should be turn screw lightly until it bottoms & back out one and a half turns. While governors can cause problems, they are seldom the culprits. Its usually a dirty carb.

i would agree on the lean except that if i idle it for 30 sec or so and then go to full throttle it will clear black exhaust initially at full throttle. that would lend me to believe that the low speed mixture is too rich but i have adjusted it with the slowest speed it will run at without quiting and then leaned the slow speed in till stumble then back out to stumble and set at half way.there is only about a 1/2 turn between lean and rich stumble so the needle is very sensitive . once i get this slow speed adjusted i turn the high speed  out from the initial 1 1/2 turns from fully seated to get it to run without popping thru the exhaust. at that setting i then let it back down to idle for a while and then to full throttle to see if it's loading up or going to full throttle with no loading up or stumble. the reason i ask about the govern setting is that i bent the wire going to the throttle plat from the governor and i don't know if i got it right when i put it back in. when going from slow to wide open throttle now it seems to take longer to reach full rpm. i believe after reading some posts here that the high rpm spec is between 3150 and 3450 rpm.i set the rpm's to 3250 with one of those briggs coil rpm wires. i've used it before for other things and it seems to be fairly accurate when you get the hang of how to use it. would like to know how to initial set the governor so i know that's ok. i kind of messed it up trying to figure out the popping at full rpm.i believe that was because it was reving to high(yeah i messed with the little screw by the throttle knob)and was too lean for the high rpm. will start it up this morning and see how it runs from cold start up. it has always been a start and go right away engine with very little warm up so that tells me the carb if anything is on the rich side. except for the occasional popping at full rpm. i know these carbs aren't the most  sofisticated and maybe it's the nature of the beast. thanks mike
