Re: Briggs and Stratton 3.5 HP engine surges...why?

Kurt - the surging (also called hunting) is caused by a lean fuel condition. If there is a mixture screw on the carb, turn it counterclockwise 1/4 to 1/2 turn & see if the hunting stops. If not, try one full turn counterclockwise. If that doesn't work, the carb needs to be removed, disassembled, cleaned out & reassembled with a rebuild kit. Marty

Vacuum leak caused by a bad intake or carb gasket - spray carb cleaner around the carb mounting points & see if the engine speed changes - if so, you found the problem area. Could be a blown head gasket too - check for low compression. Cleaning the bowl nut on this one WONT HELP since it IS running on Natural Gas... Marty

Unless you know someone who can weld it for nothing, figure on spending at LEAST $100 for welding services. Tough call here - $100 minimun to weld, a new pump at $200, or sell it as is & buy another one for around $300. Maybe look for a good, used pump instead? Best of luck... Marty

Re: Converting to Electronic Ignition on old lawn tractor???

Check shutoff wire for grounding out - that will cause a no spark condition. Also, make sure you have a new spark plug. If the engine is a Briggs/Stratton, there may be a coil available that eliminates your points setup & without changing the flywheel. Otherwise, there are electronic modules you can buy that eliminate the points & condensor, but you may still need a coil. What are: Tractor make & model? Engine make & model? Marty
