Stationary bikes are home fitness equipment that offer a great lower body workout. They are easy to use and offer aerobic exercise many can enjoy. Most people know how to ride a bicycle, but even if you don't the motion is simple and the bike is stationary taking the precarious balancing out of the act.
Exercise bikes come in two types. Upright and recumbent.
An upright bike looks like a regular bike. A high intensity workout can be reached on this type of bike as you can stand on the pedals, leaving the seat. Some riders have problems with their knees on an upright bike.
A recumbent bike reclines at an angle. Many have bucket seats that offer back support. Some riders find less strain on their knees and back. Some riders feel that a less intense workout is achieved on a recumbent bike. You can always try for yourself.
What to consider when deciding.
Many people find that they can easily read on an exercise bike. You are already sitting with your hands free. Your upper body is not moving up and down and your hands are not actively engaged in the exercise leaving them free to hold the book and turn pages.
Riding an exercise bike is a simple exercise with a simple motion. You most likely already know how to ride a bike, therefore there is no learning curve.
There is little to no stress on your knees when using an exercise bike properly.
Exercise bikes require little maintenance. They tend to be very durable making them a purchase that will last.
Compared to other types of home fitness equipment, exercise bikes are fairly inexpensive.
If you are looking for very intense aerobic workouts, you may have to put in extra effort on an exercise bike. You can certainly achieve a good workout on an exercise bike, but you will have to add arm movements to reach a peak once you are in good aerobic shape.
When shopping for an exercise bike, climb on. Make sure the seat in comfortable to your seat. If you plan on using the bike often you want to be sure that the padding on the seat is firm and supportive, but also comfortable to your bottom. You don't want a sore bum to shorten a workout.
