vintage/collectible vacuums
04/25/06 at 3:11pm

Hello Everyone. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has really old vacuums that they'd be willing to sell. I know most of you pros on this forum have a "bone yard" consisting of a backroom or even a warehouse full of old machines. For the most part, I'm interested in machines 30 years or older. I guess quite a few of you collect them like I do, but leave a message if there's anything you care to part with.

I have 441 vacuums in my personal collection, most of which are made before World War II.  My favorites are my model 1 Royal (1910) upright, my Hoover model 3 (1912), Hoover Baby (1915), and Eureka model 6 (1917).
I have the complete Electrolux collection from the 1924 model V (5) through Super J (1976).  I have a complete collection of Air-Way from the 1920 model 1 through the 2000 "Signature Series" model, plus the prototype for the Air-Way X-Treme" (a bagless Air-Way canister using a dual cyclone filtration system) and a prototype for the Rainbow Upright vacuum, which Rexair never saw fit to put into production.

I would really like too see these prototype uprights.  I wouldn't mind seeing the rest too.  Maybe this June?

Hi Dual,

Is there or will there be a pictoral record of your collection?

Hi, John.

I too have a reasonably large collection of vintage vacuums.  Might consider selling some of them.
Hope to attend the Vacuum Cleaner Collectors Club convention in St. Louis in mid June.

One of the 'activities' at this year's VCCC meeting (June, St. Louis) is a Saturday picnic and a visit to my home to see my collection.  Many long time club members are thoroughly familiar with the cleaners in my collection, I've hosted the annual convention three times in the past 13 years.  I displayed my vintage Royal model 1 upright at the convention in Milwaukee several years ago.  It's the second oldest vacuum in the club (one club member has one vacuum older than my Royal, a Spangler from 1907).  I only collect electric vacuums, non-electric sweepers don't do anything for me.

Some of the cleaners in my collection are rather new machines, a Kirby Tradition I bought new in 1980 for example, and certainly my entire Dyson collection is rather 'new'.  I'm most proud of my collection of very old Royals, Electrolux, Eureka, and Hoover machines - all from before World War II, and most from before 1930.
The most prized thing in my collection, though, isn't an actual vacuum cleaner.  It's the manufacturing blueprints for the 1920 Air-Way Sanitary System upright, given to me as a small 'thank you' for designing the Air-Way Signature Series for the Air-Way Company in 2000.

MussinUK:
I like your tag line "old hoovers are gr8".  I agree.  Is there any more wonderful Hoover than the model 700? Don't think so, unless it would be the awesome model 150.  Or perhaps the huge 972 (a model 700 on steroids).

So what was the cleaner on UK's eBay?

I have two HOOVER 700 series (with and without the light) and the literature and advertisements of the day that the Smithsonian in Washington DC is interested in having for their exhibit.  I've agreed.
