Best upright or canister for bi-level carpet home?
12/15/06 at 8:23am

I have a bi-level home mainly carpet, some wood and some vinyl floors.  I have carpetted stairs.  My carpet is a dark blue/green color and every little thing shows on it.  I often get little strings or other lint type material stuck in the carpet and my vacuum wont' pick it out so I have to get it out with my hands.  I dont' have any pets.  I am looking for a good quality vacuum that will clean my carpets with great suction power.  I am sick and tired of buying $150 Hoovers that only last a year until the belt or something else breaks.

Any recommendations?

Hello Squale:

A few questions for you to answer before I make a recommendation of a vacuum(s) for your needs and wants.

What is your vacuum budget?  Are you the primary user of the vacuum?  Do you have a preference for a bagged and/or bagless vacuum?

In defense of the Hoovers you mentioned.  One year for a belt on most machines is pretty common.  Most vacuums out there require regular belt, bag, brush replacements as part of regular maintenance.    There are, of course, exceptions to this rule; I am sure that others here can give you the names of machines that don't require this type of maintenance.

You might want to consider the Panasonic Performance Plus Platinum line.  They are relatively lightweight and very powerful.  You can find several models in the $200 to $300 range.   You can purchase a deluxe tool set with a nice long hose for the stairs and bare floor cleaning.  They're not perfect, but they pack a lot of features for the money.

Wrt not needing to replace drive belts:  Some of the Kenmore uprights offer a direct drive brush roll, with no belts to need replacing.

Well budget wise I would like to stay around $500-$600.  I think a canister would work better for me with my carpetted stairs.  Plus a canister seems to have more attachments, etc.  But like I said my house is mainly carpet.  I was at this website: http://www.vacorama.com/  and read that for an upright, the Sebo vacuums are the best and for canisters the Miele brand is the best.  A friend of mine has a Rainbow canister and that thing is very nice, but I am not paying $2K for a vacuum.  Plus I hear the Miele canisters are more powerful than the Rainbow is.

So in that price range, what would you all recommend?

Oh and I will be the one vacuuming most of the time.  I like the uprights for easy use but I like canisters better for all around cleaning I think.

Oh and I am not partial to bag versus bagless.  I just want something that remains going strong no matter if the bag or canister is full.

Hi there,

From my experience the Rainbow is a good vacuum but a nusance because you have to put the water in in to vacuum then empty it when ur done. I used to own two and got rid of them just because they were too much to deal with. The Miele canisters haven't really impressed me, i think for less than the cost of a miele you can get a kenmore canister that works just as well if not better. The Sebo uprights, however, are fantastic. In my opinion one of the best out there. I have the commercial version of the Sebo ( Windsor Sensor) that i use for my cleaning business and i absolutely love it. it also used geared belts that won't stretch so they don't require replacement and it has a clutch type mechanism to prevent they belts from being damaged if a sock or something does get caught in the vacuum. Direct drive brush rolls to me were a bad idea to begin with. If something like a sock or shoe or whatever jams up the brushroll the inner gears can be stripped out and it would be a costly repair- I have seen this happen before. With regular rubber belts just be sure to replace them every six to twelve months to maintain optimum performance.

Hope this helps,
Seth

I would like to suggest looking at the Aerus line of Vacuums (formerly Electrolux) . They have excellent Uprights . 3 different price ranges depending on features and warranty. There are 3 canisters to choose from too. All have the same motor . The features , warranties and attachment set varies. They are excellent machines and will do you well on your carpet and furniture. And they are made in the U.S.. Service after the sale has been afeature of the company for years.
To see more about the equipment you can go to : WWW.Aerusonline.com and learn about all of their products.

Hello Tiger21:

Do all the new Lux vacuums, uprights and canisters, offer the bag missing protection, circuit breaker protection, and thermal protection features?

Hi,this machine is indeed a very good choice, the series has been around since the mid 80's called the discovery2, when used properly it will last longer than any BOJACK  brand out there............
