Buying Advice on a Lightweight Upright
12/19/06 at 5:57pm

I am looking to purchase an upright for my mother for a Xmas gift.  She is 78 years old and is in excellent shape.  She is extremely neat and has no pets or anyone else in the house.  She has frieze carpet but not extremely thick.  She really doesn't use onboard attachments so these are not a big deal.  I looked at the Orecks, but don't think they are worth the money.  I am willing to spend up to $400 for a cleaner.  I just want something that is easy for her to push when she vacuums.  She also has no stairs in the house.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The RICCAR Supra Lite RSL3 and/or Simplicity Freedom F3500, MSRP about $350-$379.  Approximately 9 pounds.  HEPA rated. Headlight. 30 foot cord.  Bagged.  Very good carpet performance.  Excellent barefloor cleaners.  Quick and easy to use.  Two year warranty.

This company also makes the HOOVER Ultra Lightweight which is comparably appointed and priced with a 2 year warranty.

If you want to spend a little more visit this website for the Lux Lite and look at the Specs and Features: http://www.aerusonline.com/products/vacuumcleaners/luxlite.cfm

Well I really think the oreck Xl21 is just one of the sweetest vacuums ever.  Not the normal reck xl but the 21.  It's the quietest, lightest. most efficient, easiest to use vacuum, and it has a 21 year warranty, but don't waist your time getting the stupid caniister the say is free, tell them u don't want it and u'll discover they tacking it's price on.   The Eureka Sanitaire is very light, and my favorite vacuum.  You might look at the Sebo. it's not light, but very easy to push.

I think that you should test drive the Riccar Supalite or Simplicity Freedom "8lbs." uprights.  They clean carpeting very well.  They are very powerful for a liteweight upright.  There is virtually no "handle weight" when vacuuming.  These have a looped handle which is a big plus if the user has limited hand strength.

Like Carmine said, you can find this vacuum under the HOOVER nameplate for about the same price.  There is another nameplate you can also find this machine under, but it is not available everywhere like the previously mentioned.

The only ORECK models that I would even give a nod to is their top of the line upright XL21.  They clean better than the older models.  They have stiffer bristles and better wheels and wheel placement.  I still would not recommend one at the prices they are asking.

I know of the Lux Lite from its original maker and find that it cleans quite well.  The bags are quite common, so they will be easy to obtain.

My favorites for the lightweight models are the Riccar Supralite, Simplicity Freedon and the Hoover lightweight model.  These are all basically the same great vacuum, made in the USA.  I haven't tried the new Aerus model yet, but from what I have heard, it is good.  So you might want to try one out if there is a Aerus store near by.  The Oreck XL21 is their bet one yet, but at a price of $700, and with a performance that I feel is still not as good as the Riccar, its not worth it.  Again I don't really know how the Werus fits in with the others.

Tiger21;

I am not sure why you are comparing the Lux Lite and the ORECK XL Classic when we are talking about the XL21.  The XL21 is an improvement, but like I said, I still would not recomment it.
