At least for the two quarters of calendar year 2005, the title for most new vacuum units sold is held by Dirt Devil (according to NPD).

When I was first in business I cared about unit volume, but it didn't take me too long to figure out that I can't feed my family on units.

In the case of BEST BUY, the unit sales is a factor that affects business revenue.  More persons will go to BEST BUY to buy the DD swivel glide than the dyson.  So DD increases the BEST BUY store traffic.  This in turn is good for BEST BUY business.  Many of these DD customers will be buyers of other products, like flat screen TV's.

I have to disagree that a specific $59 DD vacuum would be much of a traffic driver.  My experience would tell me a typical consumer would enter a store looking for a vac in this price range and end up with a DD as opposed to a consumer deciding to make a specific trip to Best Buy to get the $59 DD swivel glide.  The customer who is making that specific trip to buy a predetirmend $59 DD is unlikely to be the type to impulse buy a flat screen TV.   Wink

I disagree based on personal and professional experience.  I think most of the flat screen TV buyers are representative of certain buying genre who are proned to buy $59 vacuums.  I have at least a dozen or more I call my friends.  We are all avid sports fans.  They would probably use the trip to BEST BUY for the vacuum as an excuse to scope out the latest and greatest in TV's and electronics.

So you would think that the $59 DD is a destination purchase?  In other words you think most of these are sold in Best Buy by people making a specific trip to Best Buy having already chosen that specific vacuum to purchase?

To then take it a step further that consumer that made that specific trip to purchase that specific $59 DD at a specific retailer would then impulse buy a flat screen?

You got the picture.   Superbowl week for the big game.  Yes Sir.  Buy the big screen TV in a heart beat.

Yes,  those sports fans went in to buy a vacuum and came out with a $4000 TV.
They also returned the TV after the game along with the POS vacuum.

I still don't get some people,  they spend all this money on their high end appliances, expensive furniture, and even very nice carpet.  But when they pick a vacuum, they buy the $56 DD.  Everything is nice and expensive but the vacuum.  I see this too much around here, I find it very annoying.

Not with "March Madness" just a few short weeks away fromt he Superbowl, especially if they are basketball fans.  The likelihood of a vacuum getting returned after the Superbowl weekend is greater than a big screen TV.

Vacuums are THE MOST returned of all appliances to big box retailers.  Vacuums are also the most costly merchandise returns for TARGET retail stores in recent years and rank high on the list of operating costs for other big box retailers.

I suspect they are not the $59 DD vacuums either, despite the fact that NPD reports Dirt Devil sold the most vacuums in units from January 2005-June 2005.

Trying to change to your benefit again.  I was responding to your comment about the Superbowl.  Big screens have a high return rate after major events.
Women look for vacuums, men for TV's so I doubt that a sale on one increases sales of the others.
