Despite the trials and tribulations of Wal*Mart, the stock price is slowly climbing.  An indication that investors are pleased with the recent changes.
I'm going out on a limb for 2007 and predicting that Wal*Mart (WMT) stock will be one of the best, if not the best Dow performers, in 2007.  It's currently trading at its lowest multiple in years and is $47+ a share.  (Right on the heels of BEST BUY).

Consumer Reports rates and ranks the Oreck XL21 for $700 (before the $100 discount) above all dyson DC07 and DC14 models including the Animal models for $499 and $549.  Particularly for ease of use: Oreck gets "Very Good" and all the dyson DC07 and DC14 models get "Fair."
         -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ease of use does not contribute to cleaning performance.  Neigher does a light.

According to Oreck (Oreck.com; 1-888-673-2578) purchasers may be eligible for a free one year supply of HEPA-Celoc Filtration bags (I believe 8/9 bags) AND a free compact canister in addition to the 21 year warranty, 21 free annual tune-ups (including a new paper bag insert), and $100 discount for a trade.  Check with the nearest Oreck Clean Home Center location.

     ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

More reasons for a $59 vacuum to cost the consumer $700. What is the return rate due to purchases only to keep the free gift?

Consumer Reports grades the Carpet and Bare floors performance for Oreck XL21 as "Good" and "Excellent" respectively.  The same ratings given to the dyson DC07 and DC14 Animal models.

With the exact same "rug" and "bare floor" ratings a "headlight" and "ease of use" provide added value to Oreck's cleaning performance vice the dysons.  Why?  Easier to use equates to more likely to be used more often even daily.  A light allows vacuuming in areas that are not lighted; i.e. under beds, sofas and furniture and in closets.  The lower and lighter Oreck profile vice dyson and easier to use Oreck allow cleaning the "unlit hard to get areas" quicker and more effectively than with the dysons DC07 and DC14.  Dyson attachments would be used to do the job.  AND dyson attachments do not work as well as the Oreck brush nozzle (IMHO).  AND the dysons attachments require more time, more effort, and more bother.  The likely end result:  Most dyson users will NOT clean "the hard to get areas" as often and as quickly as Oreck XL21 users.

The 21 year Oreck XL21 warranty, 21 free yearly services, free supply of ONE year's worth of bags, free compact canister, and $100 trade-in allowance ONLY apply WITH THE PURCHASE of the Oreck XL21 according to Oreck.  So the return rate of the XL21 to keep the free gifts is ZERO.

I know of two XL21's that were returned and the free gift was kept each time.  No, I did not do it.

The dyson with attachments performed better than the dyson brush bar on my carpets too.  At least I didn't hear the gawdawful ratcheting noises and the attachments cleaned the surface dirt like dog hair.

BUT they are people that you said you know!

Unfortunately, there are always some very few number of people looking for something for nothing and a way to get it.  In these cases, product performance and satisfaction have nothing to do with their motives.  These people are no better than thieves and liars.  In some the persons cannot get credit approval to make the Oreck purchase.  Their returns are irrelevant.  It's a cost of doing business, like advertising.

AND, no doubt the reason that most big box retailers revised their merchandise return and refund policies to make them more restrictive and/or eliminate altogether.  Their reasons are to reduce the high cost of returns and refunds due to fraud, waste and abuse by ill-intentioned consumers.

Oreck offers a free 30 day in home trial evaluation on some of its XL upright vacuums, not its top of the line XL21.  With a NO-RISK guarantee to accept the vacuums (upright and compact canister) back with NO QUESTIONS ASKED at any time during the 30 days at Oreck's expense for the return mail.  AND allow the recipient to keep the free gift (usually an iron).  Unfortunately this is a double edged sword.  On the one hand it is an excellent marketing strategy and results in increased Oreck sales year after year.  On the other hand, it is subject to misuse and abuse by some people, like the ones you mentioned that you know.

Slim pickins at the big box stores and their vacuum cleaner ads this weekend.  The usual suspects and old inventory.  This is not a busy time for big box retailers and vacuums.  Not after the Holidays.  Typically the independent stores get busy now with repairs and parts and new sales too.  Household vacuums have to be in tip top shape for the after Holiday cleaning and in preparation for "spring" house cleaning.

But before the big box retailers, the real vacuum news this week:  LOWE's stores official launch of the Electrolux Intensity both in newspaper ads during the week and in TV ads on the "View."  At $298, bagged, fold down handle, cordwinder, full bag indicator and shut off, and easy carry and storage at 16 pounds AND more suction power than its larger competition.  This has all the makings of a real vacuum winner.  Time will tell.

And HSN featured HOOVER products on Saturday, in particular the Agility rug cleaner for $169 and the FUSION Plus for $119.  The latter is a Sam's Club exclusive.  But with Sam's recent price of $109, I'm sure there was no conflict.  With the TV FUSION Plus sales and its solid almost 2 year exclusive tenure, I wouldn't be surprised if a new successor HOOVER cyclonic model is on the horizon.

BEST BUY featured BISSELL, the old Cleanview 11 for $79 and the new Momentum bagless for $99.  And dyson, the DC15 Animal.  Dyson is MSRP at $599 and no discounts.  No dyson buy here this week.

Circuit City had its usual: old BISSELL, HOOVER, and dyson.  The BISSELL Cleanview Power Trak for $99, HOOVER WT bagless for $159 and dyson DC14 All Floors for $429 and DC07 Animal for $499.  Only incentive on these oldies is no interest for 90 days.  Again no deals.

Finally TARGET bucks the trend with newbies and deals.  The BISSELL Velocity for $129, the BISSELL Healthy Home for $299 and the dyson DC17 Absolute Animal for $549.  Plus some oldies including the HOOVER Savvy for $199.  A gift card of $20 on the Savvy and $30 on the BISSELL Healthy Home.  Notta on the dyson DC17.

And I can't forget my old pal Mr. David Oreck who passed on the weekend ads but continues to advertise in the main sections of the newspapers during the week.  His own personal favorite: The Oreck XL21 Titanium: Oreck's top of the line.  With the free compact canister and $100 trade in discount.  21 Year Warranty and 21 free yearly services.

One more historical event for the week, unrelated to vacuums but noteworthy in the sportsworld:  With the NFC and AFC NFL wins yesterday, da Bears will face off against the da Colts in the Super Bowl in 2 weeks in Miami, Florida.  Why is this historical?  For the first time ever, two African American pro-football head coaches will face off for the Vince Lombardi Trophy:  Tony Dungy and his one time protege who he mentored, Lovee Smith.  Congratulations and may the best team win.

That's All Folks.

Now that the dust settles from the recent Wal*Mart firings and resignations, the management winners (?) emerge.  Just to recap, Wal*Mart lost its head of procurement, head of marketing for Sam's Club and Corporate Treasurer as well as hiring/firing the 2 Ad Agencies for managing its $580 MILLION advertising account.

John Fleming, 48 years old, is named Exec VP and Chief Merchandising Officer.  Formerly a Target merchandising exec and Chief Marketing Officer at Wal*Mart since 2005.  He led the failed Wal*Mart marketing campaign to win more affluent shoppers and the embarassing hiring/firing of the Ad agencies.

Fleming will manage 4 of the 5 product areas.  Pharmacy (the 5th) is not affected by the changes.

Stephen Quinn, 47 years old, named Exec VP and Chief Marketing Officer.  Fomerly a Pepsico Co. Exec.

The two new appointments signal a return to more promotional marketing efforts to overcome past marketing and merchandising missteps at Wal*Mart and anemic sales growth.  The new VP's will report to Eduardo Castro Wright, president of Wal*Mart's US unit since 2005 and under enormous pressure to turn things around (quickly) and prove to Wall Street analysts that Wal*Mart is still a growth company.

Expect over 280 new Wal*Mart stores opening this year.  And remodeling and expansion of hundreds of existing Wal*Mart stores.  Don't expect to see fabric departments and fishes and/or aquariums at the new stores and even some existing stores.  These are getting the ax.

110 MILLION shoppers stroll the Wal*Mart stores each week.  In Chicago recently, over 25,000 applicants applied for 325 Wal*Mart jobs.  Wal*Mart recently settled an overtime pay dispute lawsuit with its employees.  Not that uncommon.  Even the federal government had several.  Wal*Mart recently adopted "flexible work scheduling" opting to have employees in the stores at peak times and needs rather than on fixed hourly work schedules.

In the Super Bowl XL1 Wal*Mart newsapaper supplement, no vacuums were advertised for sale.  As the song goes:  Dum...da dum...dum.

Sad but true.

I was an independent for over 40 years specializing in all vacuum makes and models, parts, repairs, and rebuilts.  Always an authorized warranty sales and service dealer for several brands simultaneously.  Even during the glory days of HOOVER.
