Tried out the dc16 at Linens and Things yesterday.  Somewhat disappointing.  Didn't move all that much air compared to some of the other newer (16 - 18 volt black and deckers) - I checked the filters and they were clean.  Noisy (kinda like a dentist's drill).  The dirt chamber eject mechanism seemed very flimsy  (noted a tiny prawl  is forced against a tab molded into the bin door in order for door to open).   For $150 I expected much better.

Then again, it's a first-gen model, and perhaps it will get some revisions next year.

Here's a 2 generation B&D called the "Pivot Vacuum" for $69 with a 2 year warranty and pivoting head.  It's new (vice the corded AND cordless B&D versions which have been on the market for several years) and is on sale at most of the large retailers:

http://www.blackanddecker.com/productguide/product-details.aspx?productid=14069&toolview=2#details

If you click on the "view product demo" icon under the picture and then click on "video" on the menu bar you can view a video of the B&D "Pivot Vacuum" hand held.  It has audio too so turn on the speakers.  The B&D has a feature for the user to clean the filter, like the Euro-Pro Shark uprights, by hand turning a wheel and not touching the dirt.  Marketed primarily for cars and home use, men/women  It is ONE of dyson's biggest competitors in the hand held vacuum market at half the dyson price.

Folds up nicely too, with a pouch for storage, built in crevice tool in the pivot nozzle (vice the add on of earlier B&D models like the cyclonic hand held vacuum) lighter, quicker, and easier to use than the DC16.  The B&D doesn't have the rugged "Tim the Tool Time Man" look of the dyson which makes the B&D appealing to a larger user market, not just a "niche."  At half the dyson price, same warranty as dyson, longer cleaning time, and comparable if not larger dirt container canister (11.8 ounces) than the dyson DC16, the B&D Pivot Vacuum hand held is the better buy (IMHO).  Two for the price of one: One for the home and one for the garage. TARGET has the B&D Pivot Vacuum for a regular price of $59.

Maybe they will take the nozzle off and change it over to a cordless screwdriver.

Hi, Carmine.  Yes, I have seen and played with the Pivot Vac.  The Linens and things sample was positively choked with gravel and fine dirt, to the point that the filter bin lid, if opened,  could not be closed due to rocks jamming in the hinges.  Took a minute or so to dig all that stuff out so lids could close.  Still, after dumping the rocks and spinning the filter  (which dislodged some fine dust, then also dumped), the Pivot Vac moved more air than the Dyson did and had no trouble vacuuming up the whole lot of dumped rocks.

As for durability, some of the Dyson parts felt pretty flimsy given the products high price.

Another competitor product for the dyson DC16 hand held is the old reliable metro vac line.  The product below is specifically marketed for automobiles and is comparably priced as the dyson DC16 and has a 5 year motor warranty.  It's corded so it's old fashioned electrical technology.  But works like a charm.

Dyson does itself a disservice by its packaging of the DC16.  Most hand helds are packaged and displayed in boxes that give customers a good sense of the product.  Like the B&D pivot vacuum which has almost half of the box cut away so customers get a good look and feel for the product.  The DC16 is completely boxed and closed.  Not even a see through panel.  And many retailers do not display the DC16 for customers.  The boxes sit on the shelves closed.  Bad dyson marketing and packaging move.  For $149, you have to give potential buyers customers something special up close and personal.  Not with words.  Buyers needs something to touch and feel to reconcile their cognitive dissonance over the $149 price tag for a 3 1/2 pound hand held cleaner that cleans for 5 minutes.

I received the dyson marketing message recently about the DC16.  I noted that the Canadian dyson site includes a game and drawing to win a free dyson DC16 by correctly answering the questions and luck of the draw.  Too bad dyson didn't do the same for the US.

At $149 the DC16 is too pricey for my likes and needs.  Maybe $99, and I would spring for the product.  But I have doubts and fears about the 5 minute run time of the 21.6 Volt Lithium ion batteries.  It's not a proven source of power and technology for this application. (IMHO).

There is yet another powerful hand vac  (I just acquired one) made by Filter Stream.  Called the DIRT TAMER ULTIMA 2510, it's a wet or dry vac having a 14.8 NiCad battery, a metal screened prefilter and foam or HEPA final filter.   Has an accordion bellows crevice tool (very handy for car cleaning), headlight, lo battery light and a few small tools.  Can be had for $60 - 70, available on line or at various vac shops.

It's like the big brother of the smaller, pricy Brookstone hand vac.

The Dirt Tamer moves a huge amount of air compared to most hand vacs (especially the Dyson), is quieter,  and its battery runs at least twice as long as Dyson's (10 minutes or so).  Cleaning is relatively easy. But the HEPA filter isn't washable and will clog really fast with outdoor use (fortunately they provide a washable foam filter as subsitute).

The price may have some bearing on the claim at $149 in addition to consumer buying mentality.  Buying and using the DC16 is a way for vacuum consumers to gauge and decide IF the dyson upright (and now canister) may be a worthy purchase for their homes.  Especially consumers who read and follow Consumer Reports (which has not published reliability results for dysons YET).  Start with an affordable model (if unsatisfied only out of pocket $149) and if satisfied graduate to spending the $400 plus for the more expensive dyson models.
