I scored a free Diplomat today. It needs a good cleanup...but a new bag got it running.
 
I know it was made in 1990 but not much else. Does anyone know how much it retailed for back then? Is there any common problem with this model that I should be on the look out for? We're going to use it around the house as a second vacuum.

  The Diplomat sold for $649.95. It was put out along with the Ultralux Classic. It sold for $799.95.
   The Diplomat was a good machine. The main problem I had with it was the rocker arm that turned the switch on and off. This usually the only reason the cleaner would not turn off. Since this particular body style came out that is the only main problem. Many vac shops have told customers they needed a new switch. I have not replaced a new switch and there are three in the unit. I will check my papers and see what else I can tell you about your cleaner.

One thing to consider on a Lux vac of this vintage is the hose.  If it's the braided style, I would highly recommend replacing it.  Even though the braiding might look good, the rubber inside is probably facing dry rot, and or separating.  Between all my family members, many of our lux vacs are of this era, give or take four or five years.  I've changed all our hoses and what a difference.  A good test is to stick your finger in the nozzle and feel the air flow, then try it with a new hose, you'll be amazed at the difference, you'll think you've bought a new vac.  I agree with tiger on the switches, never replaced one, but have replaced the rocker arm on both my mothers and mine.  In regards to the cracked power nozzle housing, I've used Amroid ProWeld, professional plastic welder on the actual canister, and have had EXCELLENT results bonding the plastic.  Ambroid location is in Swanzey NH 03446.  I bought it at a model shop for about $5.  I too have encountered a noisy power nozzle, what I did was oil the motor, (provided it's not the roller brush bearing) and it worked quite well. Don't know if this is smart or not, others on the forum could probably advise more on this one.

Hi again,a little trick is when you take the p/n motor apart to service it,after you run the carbon brushes in ,tap the shaft at the belt side,and spray electra clean on it,and when mounting the motor it's very important that the right torque sequence is used.
