Title: Electrolux Diplomat
Post by Dan_the_man on 04/11/07 at 2:53pm

Hi,

I scored a free Diplomat today. It needs a good cleanup...but a new bag got it running.

I know it was made in 1990 but not much else. Does anyone know how much it retailed for back then? Is there any common problem with this model that I should be on the look out for? We're going to use it around the house as a second vacuum.

Thanks,

Dan

Hello Dan the Man:

Also called the Hi-Tech 2100 made from 1984-1992 in two models: The Diplomat and the Diplomat LX.  We have a couple of Lux experts on the Forum and they can tell you much better than me all about your new found Lux.

Dan,
The Diplomat sold for $649.95. It was put out along with the Ultralux Classic. It sold for $799.95.
The Diplomat was a good machine. The main problem I had with it was the rocker arm that turned the switch on and off. This usually the only reason the cleaner would not turn off. Since this particular body style came out that is the only main problem. Many vac shops have told customers they needed a new switch. I have not replaced a new switch and there are three in the unit. I will check my papers and see what else I can tell you about your cleaner.

Thanks for the info Carmine and tiger. The Diplomat cleaned up well. The only thing that I see wrong is that the power nozzle housing is cracked and it is very loud when operating. After investegating, It seems that it was cracked when it was cleaned last. The wheels don't stay in the upward position either.

I guess I'll keep the power nozzle for parts and see if I can find a good replacement one.

Dan,
One thing to consider on a Lux vac of this vintage is the hose.  If it's the braided style, I would highly recommend replacing it.  Even though the braiding might look good, the rubber inside is probably facing dry rot, and or separating.  Between all my family members, many of our lux vacs are of this era, give or take four or five years.  I've changed all our hoses and what a difference.  A good test is to stick your finger in the nozzle and feel the air flow, then try it with a new hose, you'll be amazed at the difference, you'll think you've bought a new vac.  I agree with tiger on the switches, never replaced one, but have replaced the rocker arm on both my mothers and mine.  In regards to the cracked power nozzle housing, I've used Amroid ProWeld, professional plastic welder on the actual canister, and have had EXCELLENT results bonding the plastic.  Ambroid location is in Swanzey NH 03446.  I bought it at a model shop for about $5.  I too have encountered a noisy power nozzle, what I did was oil the motor, (provided it's not the roller brush bearing) and it worked quite well. Don't know if this is smart or not, others on the forum could probably advise more on this one.

Hi, the diplomat was manufactured in1991,92. A electrolux of this age is due for a rebuild.Vernon is correct the braided hoses are pretty much history by now.the only problems with the tank have been the rocker in the switch box, and once in a while the insulator looses contact making the power head stutter. If you have a loud sounding powerhead ,it's probally due to the vibration in the brush roll, out of round, tired bearing on the pulley ,and even the anchor screws that hold the brush in were not installed at the factory. also check the [bellows] the plastic piece that holds the elbow in,over the years the clearences tend to loosen up.some dip's even had auto shut off valve problems.

Isn't it wonderful that all the parts to repair this machine are still available and usually are stocked by real shops and service centers..........

IT'S GOING ON 5 YEARS NOW.

Carmine knows what i am talking about.......

Hi again,a little trick is when you take the p/n motor apart to service it,after you run the carbon brushes in ,tap the shaft at the belt side, and spray electra clean on it,and when mounting the motor it's very important that the right torque sequence is used.

this is your lesson for today.............

Thanks guys...yes it is a braided hose that appears in excellect condition.

I think I will try and find a power nozzle and then see if my 8 yr old son and I can learn something playing with the old one. The nozzle sounds like a dirt bike. The vacuum sounds fine.

My son is always taking things apart to see how they work. I thought that getting an old Olympia or Silverado to fix up would be contructive for him and then he and I could learn together.

I was in a second hand store yesterday and asked if they ever get an old metal caniter Electrolux in.
A customer said she had a friend that had one and was going to put it on the curb on "junk day". She did'nt think it worked. She gave me the address and the lady led me to her basement and gave it to me.

That's how I ended up with a free Diplomat.

Are there any books or manuals available that instruct one on how to rebuild an electric motor.
