Aerus Ultra Guardian
Original Message   Feb 26, 2010 6:30 pm
Hi everyone,

I just got suckered in to buying an Aerus Lux Guardian Ultra cannister vacuum. The guy told me it was the top of the line and normally sells for $1799. I had a very old (15+ years old) electrolux that I traded in and I ended up paying $1000 plus tax. Did I get a good deal? It seems like an awful lot of money for a vacuum but I was told I shouldn't have to buy another vacuum for about 20 years or so. If it matters, I am from Maryland. It seems so difficult to shop around because the dealers don't want to give you prices over the phone. My mother was the biggest influence. She loves her electrolux vacuums.

Hi rocketman1622,

Out of curiosity about the Lux Guardian, I stopped in at an Aerus dealer just to one see for myself a few months ago.  Unfornately. the proprietor was out of the shop and for some reason the shop's demo model was locked away.  The person he'd left to mind the store did not have access.  I asked the price anyway and was quoted $1,700 but was quickly informed that with a trade-in I could buy one for about $900.   You got approximately the same price offer I got here in New York.

Forgetting what you paid, do you like the vacuum?  That's a most important issue. Another issue relates to your cleaning habits.  Do you use your vacuum for multiple purposes or just pull it out to do the carpet?

That said, there's all sorts of ways to look at this.  One is -- buy a vacuum for $1,000 and if with reasonable care of the machine you get ten or more years of good service (namely it cleans to your satisfaction, handles, stores in a manner you like and its maintenance requirements are comfortable for you) with little or no repair issues it's a deal more or less.

Assuming that you owned your prior vacuum for 15+ years as mentioned regarding its age and liked it, the Lux Guardian isn't all that different from others in the brand preceding it.  It should be easy to use as you're already familiar with the brand.  This new model however offers higher suction and you may or may not like the noise level.

This brand usually delivers good cleaning and convenience but if you don't really like the machine, quickly determine whether you are covered by a grace period in your state and return it and look at some of the other good brands in your local vacuum shops.  If your mom's not pleased, tell her you'll be happy keeo it -- if she pays for it.

Hello rocketman:

Suckered?  No.  Smart purchase.  Decent price.  Excellent vacuum.  Many years of service and satisfaction with minimal product care and attention on your part.

Rocketman,

When you bought your last cleaner the suction performance was about as I recall 305 Air watts power, a 5 year warranty, a saran covered electric hose,  and at the time the best offered.

No you didn't get suckered. You have a cleaner with a 20 year warranty on everything except the hose down to the powerhead which is 5 years which includes the belt. The hose (250) and wand system has been tested completely. They have been ABRAIDED,bent, BOUNCED, CHEMICALLY ATACKED,connected, DISCONNECTED,dropped,FATIGUED, impacted, LOADED, pulled, PUSHED, rotated,RUBED, switched, Twisted, worn,ABNORMALLY TESTED, adversely stored,AIR POWER TESTED, axial loaded, DESTRUCTIVE TESTED, effort tested,, EXTREME HEAT TESTED, extreme cold tested, HORIZONTAL FLEX TESTED< non destructive tested, OVER CURRENT TESTED, over voltage tested, RUN ON CARPET, run on floors,RUN OVER SILLS, run into walls,, SOUND TESTED< vericle flex tested, and SAFETY TESTED a total of  250 samples over 1,700,142 repititions. It took FOUR years of development for the Engineering before it came out to the home.

My wife has the Previous Guardian . She has had it since it came out in 1999. It cost $1999.95 intoductory price. She loves it and happy with it. She bought it on her own and said I can't use it or loan it out to customers. She now would like  a Guardian Ultra but doesn't want to give up her other cleaner.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I never thought in a million years I would ever pay this much for a vacuum. I was just hoping I got a good price on it after I bought it.  I called a california dealer and he told me $2800 dollars, lol. That's crazy!  My mother gave me that old electrolux. I only had it about a year. She had bought me the new Guardian upright model but I told her I wasn't going to take it and to just give me her old one because I didn't want her spending that much money on me.  I could have gotten the upright for $700 dollars but I ended up paying $300 dollars more for the cannister. He said I would have had to pay another $200 for the accessories.  I was hoping more people would reply about the price but oh well. It sounds like I got a great vacuum. I didn't realize it took four years to come up with that hose. I guess I did good.

Does anybody know anything about the Aerus water purifiers? I'm thinking about getting one but I don't know anything about them as far as quality and price.

Hi rocketman,

My feeling is that everything is priced way too high these days.  Nonetheless, there seems no way around it until consumers in general decide they can live without certain items.  That's when manufacturers, vendors and service suppliers start getting the idea that maybe they can live with a buck or two less as well.  So far I've seen what I think are noticable drops in large appliance prices.

Keeping price in mind, why did you decide not to have your original Lux repaired?  Refurbs and rebuilts of this brand do pretty well and parts and bags are usually found easily.

Hi Venson,

Yeah, maybe I should have just had the vacuum repaired but I was thinking it would cost a few hundred dollars to repair it and the guy said he would sell me the upright for $700. So I was thinking for just $400 more I could have a brand new one. Then I ended up buying the canister for a $1000, lol. So I don't know. I really was just thinking it was time for a new one, I guess.

Did you get your free 100 pack of bags with your purchase?

Did you get  the 3 free hepa filters that come with the promotion on that particular machine?

Do you get the lifetime free pick up and delivery on supplies and service.?

Hello MOLE:

Technically, if you buy the 100 package of bags, buy the 3 HEPA's and buy the lifetime pick-up and delivery, the vacuum is thrown in for free.
