Hi,
To me the main advantage of Oreck is that it is a light and simple to operate machine and owners might be more inclined to use it more frequently than heavier, more complex cleaning artillery. What does owning a fancy Kirby, Rainbow, Miele or anything else mean if the owner feels they're too much work to use it?
Ideally, a super duper machine that might help compensate for neglect would be great to own but no such machines exist. It's far better to buy a decent affordable vacuum of any type that heightens your enthusiasm in regard to cleaning just enough to make you want to use it as often as you can. Oreck -- at the right price -- is that.

Hello Everyone, Open fan uprights, by their design, have to have a cooling fan which is going to expell particles from the carbon brushes as they are worn away. A power nozzle has a cooling fan, too, right, albeit a tiny one? So a particle counter held at the vent slits of a running power nozzle should yield a high count as well, shouldn't it? I have not looked for the vent slits on a Miele power nozzle, but how else could the motor be kept from overheating? And if the Miele power nozzle has vent slits, then a particle counter placed there would yield a significantly higher count than just room air, right? And on the subject of the particle counter, Jerry always takes a count of the room air. The counter does not care if the air is stagnant or tornadic, but the faster particle laden air moves past the sensor, the more particles it is going to count. Also, Jerry always tests new Mieles against used machines of whatever brand. While the particle count may be quite low on a 20yr old Miele subjected to proper maintenance, will it be absolute zero? Dunno, and until someone does precisely that and posts the results, we won't know. And isn't interesting that Jerry has not posted a video of the Miele going up against a Lindhaus, Sebo, Emer, or Bosch? But then he only wants you to consider machines he knows he can prove to be inferior to the Miele. The Dyson vid? The emptying of the container, and and explanation of the expense of having a belt/clutch assembly replaced should have been sufficient. But IF he was going to tamper with the outcome, as least he should have reshot the vid so it wasn't detectable. Trebor

Hi Carmine,
My issue with his Oreck video is where he places the particle counter. Doing a particle test at the rear vent and neck on the Oreck would be akin to doing the same thing at the neck of a Miele powerhead. There is no way that will give a zero reading either. Does it make the Miele a bad machine? No, but it doesn't make the Oreck a bad machine either.

Gerry Rubin has a likeable sales charm despite his misguided antics. I suspect that most non-vacuum professionals would come away from the demo with this point: The kapoc quickly rendered a DC07 inoperable by hitting the max full line so soon. Requiring the user to pause and do a dirt bin dump before proceeding. While the MIELE cann in contrast picked up everything in dyson's dirt bin [the largest dirt bin capacity of all dyson models] and still had a long ways to go before needing a new bag. All the rest is an entertaining side show for effect. Very appropo for Gerry Rubin. Carmine D.

Hiya MOLE, Filter Queen has been tops in my books for many years. I know and understand all the arguments in regard to straight suction versus an active brush roll but FQ is one of the few straight suction cans I'd want around to attack someplace in need of a real cleaning with. I hear the the new models with the improved powerheads are pretty good on carpeting. However, I think this brand too is going to suffer some in future due to price. Speaking of Electrolux, I just saw one from 1939 on eBay -- the single vent version with the spring behind it not the inward swing "saloon doors." People also need to see the Lux XXX to get at least an idea of what a well made machine looks like. Then again, maybe they shouldn't. A long time time will pass before we see that calibre of work again. The XXX usually sold for around $75.00 -- right? Considering that during its time $75.00 a week would have been considered a highly adequate salary, I'd think people with an income near that range were getting a real bargain as it turned out that these Luxes are still around and working AND still repairable. By the way, what is Aerus doing these days? Best, Venson

Hi Dusty: You're right and I can't/don't disagree with you. The issue with all comparative particle counter readings in vacuums is where to locate the nozzle for the test readings and consistency for comparison. The best tests are done for canns, where the particle counter meter can be placed in the same location [filtered exhaust air] for comparison testing. Exactly the reason we don't use a particle counter (though we do have one) for use during a demo. Finding the sweet spot where you can get close enough to a filter without surrounding air being drawn in is not an easy task on most machines. While I've been able to achieve 0 counts on some Riccar and Eureka product, the filter grills usually get in the way of producing a true reading. Sebo, with it's soft bumper exhaust is a whole other story. Trebor: Jerrys done Sebo too, just not a vid. You can see his review here. http://consumer-reporter.blogspot.com/2008/04/miele-versus-sebo.html Dusty

We would be the people that the customer is relying on to help them with a decision and they come to us becuase they can't get any help in a box store. We shouldn't be telling anyone what to spend, that's not our decision but we should be pointing out what features and what kind of quality they can get for their hard earned dollar. As with your store, we always find our customers drawn to older Electrolux, Filter Queens, and Tristars. Can't keep enough of em on the floor at any given time. Dusty

HI Dusty:
Thanks for posting the link which is worth a read. The email exchanges between David in Merced, California and Gerry Rubin in NJ which appear to have been posted in real time are an excellent insight into David's reliance and satisfaction with Gerry Rubin's advice and the confidence David has in Gerry Rubin. Interestingly, Gerry Rubin sold David on the MIELE Capricorn w the 236 P/N over the SEBO cann, but for the reasons David explained, it was too late for him to make the vacuum purchase from Gerry Rubin. But, apparently based on this assistance, Gerry Rubin won all future MIELE business from David. All in all, a very nice ending for both. Carmine D.

Thank you Carmine and Dusty, I had read that exchange between Jerry and David, however, I am just a trifle curious to see the Sebo fail the emissions test, since, according to German testing, all the Sebos have S-class filtration, which is supposed to equal or surpass HEPA. Sebo also makes uprights and the new hybrid Felix which is an upright, stick vac, hand held portable and now a floor polisher if you want to purchase the separate motor driven head. What about Lindhaus? They manufacture for the health care industry, and now are aggressively pursuing a share of the consumer market. Maybe Miele does not consider Lindhaus or Sebo or the newcomer,Emer, any competition to them, but it lsure looks like Jerry is setting up straw men to knock down, and avoiding any challenges from any competitor who really 'coulda bin a contendah' Trebor

They will tell customers and anyone who asks, Gerry Rubin included, that the best in filtration of all of the 3 is Lindhaus hands down, period, end of story. I have no reason to doubt their honesty. Most don't push these brands, preferring instead to let them sell themselves. Rarely have I seen a Lindhaus on display in their stores. Usually boxed and new in cartons. And the Lindhaus brand is discussed only if the opportunity presents itself by a customer who knows the MIELE and/or SEBO but is still looking for something immer besser!
