Sorry - meant Z-hook end, but you figured it out anyways.

You have to either pinch the two tabs by the end with the x-hook connector, or remove a cotterpin, or something that is holding the round connector at the control panel by your waist when you are standing behind it. Additional photos at both of those locations could help.
There may be suggestions on Youtube.

Re: Help me choose between an old Ariens and old Toro

People have had very good results buying a $14 Chinese carb off EBay. Look on Snowblowerforum.com
Does one machine have less rust or better tires ?
I own both a Toro and an Ariens, and feel that they are very comparable. Do you have preference for Orange over Red ? LOL

Try putting on the old belts, and see how it runs. And no, Tecumseh does not make belts, just engines.

Re: Ariens 8524 Snowblower - tons of power, but very slow. Suggestions to speed it up?

A bigger tire/wheel combination will increase the speed but also change the tilt of the machine - but probably not enough to have the tilt make any operation change.
