Awe Chute/2010 Pro Track
Original Message   Mar 1, 2012 6:24 pm
Hi Guys,

I have an Ariens 2010 Pro Track purchased used October 2011. When using today,my second time this season I had

to hold the chute swivel control,it would not lock. Took off cover to see what was going on. The cable is hanging up and

not releasing the lock to hold the chute in position. Any ideas what would case the cable to hang up and not release.

                                                                                                                                                                   Thanks,Peter

Below is a Snowman post which may be related:

The kit is supplied if someone orders a replacement cable on an older machine. It updates the system to the current spec gear (shorter sector teeth), lock arm (HSLA), and cable (various updates). Your unit already has the latest spec parts. The system requires a very particular adjustment. If it's not locking in, then it's likely adjusted wrong ("close" is not good enough for this particular feature). A few things to check to make sure this system is operating correctly:

1.) Cable must be completely free of slack, but not pretensioned. Lock arm must return fully to the root of the sector gear when the handle is at rest. The instant the control is rotated left or right, the lock arm must move immediately. If the control is moved slightly and the lock arm does not move in kind, there is too much slack in the cable. The system is contingent on 3/16" or so of cable travel. Almost every machine I've ever seen with a problemait ccontrol had this adjustment incorrect.

2.) Make sure the lock arm is not bent or worn out. Operating this control for a length of time when adjusted incorrectly, or slamming the chute into postion abruptly can damage the lock arm.

3.) The chute pedestal must be adjusted in it's most vertical position. There is clearance in the holes in the pedestal, if it's not perfectly vertical the chute is not swinging on a horizontal plane with repsect to the rest of the unit which can cause operational problems.

4.) J-clamp for the remote chute cap cable must be bent upward slightly. The cable fitment is fairly tight when turning the chute to the right. If this is bent downward tight against the frame, the cable may get snug on the full rightward rotation.

5.) Some folks have lubricated the bushings and sliding plates in the control with positive results.

6.) You could check your parts manual and make sure all the parts are present and correctly assembled. A missing bushing or the like would cause something like this. Also, be sure the return spring for the lock arm is properly installed.

7.) If none of this helps you should see your dealer and have the problem corrected under warranty.

To clarify further, item number 4 refers to the J-clamp securing the remote cap cable to the base of the engine.
