gas vrs electric chain saw
Original Message   Apr 27, 2011 1:12 am
My 3.5 hp Pollman electric chain saw broke the other day . Is there a difference in performance gas vrs electric. Who makes a  good chain saw? Who is top wood chuck?  I'm cutting 12-14" dia. trees and a few telephone polls . What units do you guys have and how do you like them. i like light units. My 3.5 hp electric weight is 5-7 lbs. Gas units weigh that in the small range but the HP is lower 2.3 Hp. Will it out perform my old electric? Does anyone know. I'v been looking at Stiel, Echo and Huskuverna. i have a Echo powered  tiller with no problems also a Husuverna weed eater with no real problems. Some folks say Echo is heavier than a Husuverna. Others say a lower end Husuverna is a Pollman. I don't have very little feedback on Stiel. I'm tird of buying junk.

Stihl, Echo and Husqvarna are generally regarded as the top of the line gas powered chain saws. You should go to various dealers and see which one feels most comfortable to you.

Toro Wheel Horse 522xi GT, Honda HS928TA, Honda HS621AS, Honda HS520A, Toro CCR3000 (work in progress), Honda HS624WA (sold 08/23/2010), Stihl BR550 Backpack Blower, Stihl MS250, McCulloch MS1635, Honda EM6500SX Generator

Small 100 series Husqvarna saw are just re-badged Poulans.   Compared to an Echo of similar performance, they're heavy.   For a small saw, I buy Echo.  They're light, powerful for their displacement and reliable.  Small Stihls are good saws too.   Between Stihl and Echo, I'd take either saw at whoever is offering the best price.

Never used an electric chainsaw.  Couldn't find a 60 mile long extension cord and unfortunately, there are no currant bushes in our area.

I bought an electric Makita "14" chainsaw maybe eight years ago and I really like it for what I use it for. I have a honda generator so part of the reason for the electric saw was so I could keep the generator limbered up so when I needed it, it would run. I would buy another one of those saws as I have never had a problem with it, I did get a deal on it when I purchased it or I probably wouldn't of bought it as they aren't a cheap priced unit. If you want a gas saw I would agree with the others who said stihl or echo, the echo impresses me because they have a five year consumer warranty. Good luck.
