Ariens 724ST 7HP Tecumseh Gear Case Oil
Original Message   Mar 17, 2011 6:25 pm
Hey guys, I am trying to find the right gear case lube or proper substitute for this snow blower.  I just picked it up for a reasonable price.  I was originally looking at the 926LE but I decided it would be too big to get through my garage door into my back yard.  We will see.  I am confident that if I find the machine too small I can easily get my money back and go bigger.  Anyways,

It is a mid ninties machine model 932027 and the part number for the gear case lube is 00008100.  I can not find it online anywhere, wondering if there is a substitue I can pick up over the counter at my local automotive shop or Canadian Tire.

Also, the reason I want this is I would like to take apart the front auger assembly and check the auger shaft or shaft rake.  When the augers are running I notice the augers pulsating up and down with maybe about a half inch of movement.  I am thinking this rod may need to be replaced and I would like to do an inspection and just want the lube to rebuild the front.

Also any ideas on what to use for a new gasket?

Is it possible that this movement is normal for a snow blower of this year?

Thanks

Mike

K, I may have answered my own question. They do not make that gear lube anymore unless you buy it online for 15 bucks! I will see what my local dealer sells the L3 for, if that will work in my machine. Any other parts I should be replacing once I start inspecting and rebuilding the front end of this machine? Mike

Use the L3 oil for this and Loc-Tite 518 for the gasket. Make sure you clean everything well after you take it apart. Also don't goop the Loc-Tite on too heavy, if it squeezes into the oil seals they will leak. I'd replace all the oil seals for sure. Put a very thin bead (1/32") around the rear oil seal OD at the input shaft to make sure this seals well.  Make sure you don't cut the oil seals lips on any burrs or cross holes when installing them. Seal savers should normally be used to install the oil seals, but those may be hard to come by. Get some teflon pipe tape or 565 Loc-tite to seal the filler screw each time you uncork it. The tape works better with a thread that is not perfectly clean; be generous with it. Some fo the older boxes like this had a 1/2" long filler screw. If your's does, be careful not to strip it when installing. Replace worn parts as needed after inspection. Be sure you grease your augers with a good water resistant grease when you put this back together.

The gasket is fiber/paper pn 000080 and available. Permatex works.
