Which is a better SS, MTD 4.5-21 or Craftsman (Murray) 5-21
Original Message   Mar 4, 2011 9:24 am
Thanks to all who talked  about smaller SS machines for those pita snowfalls that don't merit the effort of getting out the 2 stage.

I've spotted a couple of used SS's that I can get for a good price. Haven't seen them in person yet but I'm wondering which might be the better choice for the longer term when it comes to replacement parts.
(then again, if I can haggle them down far enough, I could just replace instead of repair?)

One is a Craftsman (Murray) 5-21 that Borat has spoken well of

and the other is an MTD 4.5-21

Thanks

I know the Craftsman has a Tecumseh engine.  What's in the MTD?  Probably the same.

As I had previously posted, the rear motor mount on the Craftsman was cracked to almost being completely severed.   It was allowing the engine to flex enough to eat a belt.  I think I posted my pics of the fix.  Other than that, if you attach an over-ride string or wire to the governor lever, you'll double the horsepower.  At least that what it seems like with mine.  The engine doesn't seem to  mind spinning up to 6000+ rpm and at those speeds, it move some serious snow despite it's age and the fact that the paddles are fairly worn.   The machine is light and very easy to use.  With the makeshift throttle, it's actually fun.  It's like operating a chainsaw for snow.

If the MTD has a B&S R-tek engine, I'd go for it.  I doubt that it does.  On the other hand, if it has a Tecumseh, I'd go for the Murray.  That is, of course if both machines are fairly equally aged and used.
