Help with a Generac 1460 - Which engine?
Original Message   Feb 21, 2011 1:59 pm
I inherited my late father's Generac Pressure washer model 1460 and I'd like to change oil and do a little maintenance on the thing.

I've found the owner's manual online here: http://www.generac-portables.com/data/pdf_files/pw/1460_0en2w.pdf

But it doesn't give any specifics on the engine (in fact, the part number on the engine is "NSP", which I assume means "No Specific Part"). I know its a Honda 5.0, horizontal shaft, probably a consumer engine, but I don't know about the oil capacity, or anything else about it. Any ideas on this? Thanks for any help.

You have 2 choices. Go to  Honda  Engines official web page and look it up , or  Call small engine ware house and ask them. They can look up all your engine details. I don't think they post all your engine information. You did not mention what engine it is.  Is it a GC or GX  series? If you tell me I can look it up for you

Well, that's the thing. I have no idea which series it is. Is there a place on the engine that I check it out?

All Honda engines will say what series it it is on the pull cord cover. If it says Genrac then it is not a Honda but a Chinese copy of one. My Honda book does not list a 5hp engine. I think it is a Chinese copy of a honda gx160. Go to harbor freight for a pix and info.   It being an older engine  the HP will be listed as 5  or 5.5 hp . A gx160 is listed as 6.5 hp. oil capacity is .63 Qt. , go to Honda engines and look up Honda GX160 for more information about your engine. All info for the Chinese copy and a real Honda gx160 is the same.
You can also check  Made-in-china.com . Again I believe it is a gx160 Honda copy.  The Chinese version lists it as a 5 - 5..5 / 6.5 hp version at Made-in china .com.
Honda has various patents that exspired allowing other manufactures to copy there engines . The only real difference is quality. Some copies  are good . Most all Real Honda parts will fit a copy. If you need to replace your engine, you can at Harborfreight .com . You can get another one for $149.00.  If you want to replace it with a real Honda gx160 it may cost you $350.00 or more. I hope this helps you.

I'll check the garage tomorrow, but the cover does say HONDA in big blue letters, so its likely an actual Honda. And I don't want to replace it, I only want to know the oil capacity as I'm getting ready to change the oil.

I believe it takes .63 QT oil. Warm your engine up prior to draining to allow draining of all contaminants. Fill with .63 qt of 5w30 synthic oil. check level with your dip stick to make sure it is full.  If you do not  see any idenification on the pull cord cover, look on the engine above the oil drain plug. The engine serial # is stamped there. You can then go to engines.Honda.com web page . Once you get your serial # you can download a engine manual. If i'm wrong it may be a GC or GS series engine instead of the GX . Eather way it takes .61-.63 qt oil.

Hi Tom,

I did some research today. I have some good news for you.  Your engine model is a Honda GC160, it takes .61qt of oil. You can find more info about your engine  at  Honda outdoor web page just look up engines and your model.  For all other info on parts to your washer you can go to  www.ppe-pressure-washer-parts.com/generac-pressure-washer-model-1460-0-parts  .   They list everything for your pressure washer. I hope that helps

Thanks. I just went out to the garage and as you said, its a GC160. I'm usually pretty observant. I don't know how I missed the GC160 on the rope cover.
