Some recoils have a screw to retain the assembly to the housing so can be disassembled and repaired. Parts exploded views for this type often show the internal spring and have a part number so orderable.
Your model is held together by a pressed and bent over sleeve and not meant to be repaired. I toss them. Those are generally shown as a complete assembly so no internal parts exploded and no part numbers.
You can double check yours by feeding your engine number to http://www.outdoordistributors.com/Tecumseh/tecumseh_part_lists.html. You can also get the correct part number for you complete assembly there and google around for prices. The replacement will just bolt on and work. You can also go to a local shop and see if they have any old recoils around. Bring your recoil.
I tossed one yesterday off a 1028.
