Purchased Mr. Funnel F3CN
Original Message   Jan 27, 2005 8:44 am
Hi Fred,

I couldn't find the thread on this list when this subject came up a few days ago, so I thought I'd make a new one.  I saw the Mpeg on their website you sent me to and thought it was great.  It almost seems too good to be true how well this works.  I should have it in my hands in a few days and you can bet I'm going to demo it for myself just as they did in the Mpeg.  I think I'll be leaving out all the debris in my test, but will certainly try the "water" trick.  Thank you again for recommending it to me

  Richie,

                    You are welcome!!

Where did you order it from, Mr Funnel or West Marine?

I use mine all the time on my OPE.

I also have the large one  that I use in the winter time when getting gas for  my Trail blazer and Jag.

It sure does help in keeping water and trash out of my vehicles fuel tanks!

Hey Fred,

I ended up ordering it from a dealer on Ebay.  His feedback was 100% and extremely fast with email responses.  The cost of the F3NC seemed resonable, like $17.00 even with the shipping, so I ordered it.  He has the full line on Ebay.  One of his Ebay auctions are number,  4352316462.  How do you clean the thing out, does it come apart in any way? From the video, it wouldn't allow water to pass, only the dye colored gasoline.  But how is the water in the filter, removed or do you just let it dry out?

  Richie,

Thanks for the Ebay site, have 2 friends going to buy it!!

I shake the trash out , if any, turn it upside down to dry.

When dry, put in a plastic bag to stay clean!!

Hi...

If there's debris and / or water left in the funnel...
I dump it into a container for his purpose...

If it looks pretty clean... or little stuff in it...
I dump it back into the fuel container...

Hi there Marshall,

ROFL...I remember Bobby's name mainly from our other forum, but I can only assume by you kidding around that it must have something to do with me always wanting to prove "claims" of product performance by manufacturers.  If that's what the joke was referring to, yes, I'm guilty as charged

I learned years ago to keep power of suggestion or simply a belief out of the mix.  Things become very subjective in that respect, rather than objective.  Look at the direction my other thread is going with the Tecumseh HP issue.  Now we have Marty adding his research, that no doubt from what I've been doing the last few days in my spare time, was a frustrating and maybe an exhausting experience for him to come up with what he did.  Unfortunate his research may have been lost on the other forum.  He seems to know what he's talking about and I have to add it into the mix until Snowshoveler (Chris), whom everyone here seems to respect and trust, including myself, can determine if its a little bit of numerous factors that contribute to horse power ratings.  If anything, all this and many other threads on this board make for some entertaining reading, especially when we get hot under the collar about them.   Marshall, come up with a really controversial thread, let's keep the ball rolling!

I bought two of them (one for my dad.......I'm tired of cleaning out gas tanks and carbs for him, you could make a bale of hay out of a couple of his tanks!)

My only knock on them is that there is a couple tablespoons or more of fuel left when they are done draining.  There is a frame that supports the membrane and it sits above the floor of the funnel, not allowing the last bit of fuel thru.

I saw that Dave either throws it in another container for disposal or pours it back in the can if it looks clean.  That's a good solution.  I pour mine into the jugs of old oil that I take in for recycling.  I just wish this wasn't necessary.  It's not a huge deal, but filling the gas tank, shouldn't take more effort because of which funnel you use.

No Richie, let me explain.

Bobby was Moderator here that has seemed to disapear. Anyway, he had three products that he pushed on the forum all of the time. One was Honda anything, the other two were Pri-G and Mr. Funnel. We always accused him of working for them or having stock in them or something. I was joking around, thought maybe you remembered that about him.

He must have done a good job of pushing these items.  Now I remember how PRI-G ended up in my garage, and have been using it ever since   The difference is that I love Honda and really wanted a 724, but the two or three Honda dealers in my area here, in New York ,treated me terribly and made it seem like they were doing me a favor to even answer a single question.   You may actually recall way back I mentioned to the forum that I had gone into a dealer, didn't see a single snowblower and asked, "do you have any snowblowers I can look at"  The response I got was, "you come in here to buy, not to look.  Pay for it and when it comes in, you can look at it"  I'd never recommend one, ONLY for that reason.  I could never send someone with $2,000.00 in their hand to a dealer like that, to be treated so horribly.

Yes, I hope he comes back also.  He was a great guy.

It bought a filtered funnel when I went to pick up my mower blades recently.  I should have read more about Mr. Funnel, because it is better than just a filtered funnel.

I bought a Mr. Funnel and find it to be a pain to use.

Do you fill the fuel tank directly?  When doing so I find it very difficult to see how full the tank is and have overflowed it on more than one occasion.  The fuel tanks on my single stage blowers are small so you need to be careful when filling them.  Using the Mr. Funnel makes seeing the level harder and I have needed to use a finger to stop the fuel in the 1/2 full funnel when the blower tank is full.

The only successful way I found was to dedicate a fuel can as "clean".  Only filtered fuel goes into the can.  Then I use this can to fuel the equipment.

It would seem to be a good idea to build a Mr. Funnel fuel can.  This would eliminate many of the handling issues.

Hi Tom,

I'm glad you posted that because I realized this just prior to ordering it.  Like you, I hate filling a fuel tank and accidentally over filling it, just to spilling fuel all over the place.  My gas can is one of those larger 5-6 gallon plastic types.  I also have a spare one that I keep in the garage also.  I figured after I fuel the can up, I was going to take it home and install the funnel on my spare can and pour the fuel into that one rather than use the funnel directly on my OPE.  I don't know if this defeats the purpose, because I don't know how much, if any, these fuel containers attract water just by sitting around.  This is my solution, hopefully a good one.

What I don't like about my TEC engine is that I recently switched it over to Mobil One 5w-30.  There is only about 40 minutes of time on the oil due to this recent storm here in New York.  But I noticed that the rubber breather tube had some white goo dripping from it (obviously water mixing with oil) and when I checked the oil, this same goo was on the top half of the dip stick.  When I see this, I just wipe it off.  Given the fact these carburetors are completely open and always exposed to the elements, and maybe the breather tube as well, I really don't know if this water or condensation issue can truly be eliminated.  Not to mention the fact these winter fuels really attact water by their very nature.

I thought of running the engine for a short while each day to burn it off, but that really isn't a viable solution to me, not to mention putting needless hours on the engine.

I initially found the funnel to be a pain to use as well, but kept telling myself that it was worth it. Eventually I got the knack of using it, I just pour slowly and keep a watchful eye and ear for the fuel filling to the top.

I think its important to use it at  the point of fueling the equipment, rather than at the gas pump, due to the moisture issues.  Filtering at the pump certainly would take care of the dirt, but it's the sitting around in the garage that is 90 F today and is 5 F in 2 weeks that concerns me.  I keep a small stash of fuel around for my portable generator and I do replace it every so often (stabilized with PRI).  But when I see the expansion and contraction in those cans it reminds me of the variations of environment it has been exposed to.  I worry about  condensation, and the water getting into the fuel system of my equipt, and therefore filter just before using it.

Thanks Richie.....

Also, like you I buy and store fuel 5 gal at a time,  but I also have a 1.5 gal (for reg. gas) and a 1 gal (2 cycle gas) can that I use to fill my smaller equipment.  I merely fill my little cans from the big cans.   The small cans make it much easier to use Mr. Filter while I fuel the smaller equipt.  Much less likely to overfill using the small cans.

Hey Fred,

This was the strangest thing with this Ebay seller.  First, this guy had the fastest shipping I've ever seen.  I was on the computer checking the tracking number, and it says it's out at my front door  Then I open it up, great packaging by the way, inside was a one page instructions, the guys business card paper clipped to the instructions with $3.00 cash to boot   The actual total with shipping I sent them using PayPal was $23.74.  I've never heard of a refund like this, but I'm not complaining, just caught off guard.  Anyway, great funnel.

    Richie,

            Have you tried it already?

On my OPE I pour from one fuel comtainer thru the funnel into another container and then into my equipment.

I try to guess the amount of fuel that I'm going to use that day, or couple of days.

I just tested this funnel for myself and was amazed.  I initially thought it was a joke because the extremely fine screen it comes with sits on top of a recessed cup area.  Since water is heavier than fuel, water would naturally settle to the bottom and only the fuel would be filtered through the screen.  To my surprise and after reading the instructions, the cup does serve that purpose, but the screen itself will not allow water to pass either.  As instructed, I filled the funnel with tap water, not only beyond the catch cup area, but covering over 1/3 height of the screen.  NOT a single drop of water passed   I'm sold, this thing really works!

Fred, drinks are on me

Emmo & jubol...

Good tips on estimating how much fuel is needed and using just that amount or less to fill the OPE with the funnel...

I too find it a pain to fill the tanks thru the funnel... but I do...
pour... stop... lift funnel... look into tank... replace funnel...
pour... stop... lift funnel... look into tank... replace funnel...
pour... stop... lift funnel... look into tank... replace funnel...

...especially when filling my compact utility tractor...
I have to stand on the tractor's front tire...
...wedge something to keep the funnel in the fuel tank opening so it dosen't tip...
...and pour diesel fuel from a 5 gallon jug...
pour... stop... lift funnel... look into tank... replace funnel & wedge...
pour... stop... lift funnel... look into tank... replace funnel & wedge...

I hate these stupid new gas cans.

How do you put pressure on the side of the funnel to keep the can open?

I have been using the Briggs & Stratton Smart Fil Gas Can for years and love it, but I have to admit, I was impressed witht the video on Mr Funnel's web page. The Smart Fil can  is great because it has a good filter built into it and I absolutely never spill gas when filling my OPE to the top, but I haven't seen anything that will keep out the water and dirt, etc. like the Mr. Funnel appears to do.

Got the funnel today. Pretty quick shipping and the guy even gave me a refund on shipping costs. Had a couple of dollars paper-clipped to the one page instructions along with his business card. Can't beat that!

Tried out the funnel and it works great!

Does the funnel have filters that need to be replaced, or is it like one of those brass coffee filters where you just have to clean it out.  (I'm not comparing this product to a coffee filter)

The filter is permanently attached. You just clean it out.

Try filling it to the top with water and it will probably pass some. Mine does. But that is beyond what it what designed to do in terms of water pressure on the filter membrane.

It has a teflon coated stainless filter.  It filters down to 74 microns.  I don't know how small that is, but considering it won't allow water to pass unless under pressure, I'd say it's a very fine filter.

HighWind, make sure it doesn't pass water at 1/3 full.  Bill said if it passes that test, its perfect.  He has only seen one bad one that was damaged during shipping in all the time he's been selling them.  I would expect it to leak some filling it to the top.  I suppose that is good to know, I would imagine I should pour fuel into it slowly so not to allow the free water to pass through the filter.  Maybe that is what the recessed cup area is for.  Any water would or should end up down in that area anyway.
