   I picked up an Ariens 11.5 28.  The body is in excellent condition but the motor threw a rod and cracked the bore.  I’ve been waiting two seasons to come across a replacement engine but no luck. 

 

  An engine has come up that might be a replacement, 13 hp Tecumseh OH358SA SnowKing 913300B.  It should mount up ok but the chute support is a possible problem.

 

   The snowblower model is  924121 which came with a Tecumseh  OHSK110-221 221735D.

 

   The issue is the bracket that supports the chute gear seems to be unique to this model.  The models in this group are 924122 1124, 924332 1124, 924508 1128, 924505 1332, 924506 1336, 924118 8524, 924551 8524.  Only the 924121 uses a particular bracket.  The 118, 122, 332, 508, 551 are listed as using the same bracket.  This is fishy as 118 and 551 use L head engines and the 122, 332 and 508 use OHV engines.  I don’t think they can use the same bracket so a possible drawing callout mistake. 

 

The 13hp’s in the group come with electric chute controls with chute mounts that clamp to the base of the chute so no engine bracket and no bracket parts that could be used.

 

The engine that came with the 924121 is a 318 OHV block.  The possible 13 replacement is an OH358SA.    The question is if there are any similar models around 2004 that mounted 13’s with a head bracket that could be used?   In 2005 the chute support changed.  The 924515 is a 13hp without electric chute control and used the back of the chute standoff.  That might be a possibility but the gear housing components are different and probably too expensive to buy all those parts and scrap the existing parts.  Given the bloc difference in 318 to 358 is there any head mount bracket that could used with the 358?

This transplant will have many more problems than the chute bracket. The crankshaft is also 1/2" higher due to the counterbalance shaft accomodations. That said, you'll need new belts and belt cover risers. The bolt pattern is the same, but the offset to the crankshaft shoulder is different by about .220". There should be another set of holes in the frame to reposition the engine though. Get a parts manual and you'll see the 924505 is in the same manual as 924121. You should be able to identify what you need.

Buying new belts is ok and I can deal with the belt cover.

At first I understood “offset” above to mean right or left.  Looking at the tractor base there is another set of holes directly in back of the original mounting studs which are the holes I now think you are referring to.  No problem, I can saw off the studs, drill them out and mount to the second set of holes.

Still unsure about this part.

 

The 924505 uses a 13hp and electric chute motor.  There are no brackets to connect a chute rod to the chute back for that model.  Using 505 parts I’d have to buy a motor and mounting hardware and mount a control on the dash.  Too much trouble and expense.

 

The double box shows the mounting hardware for 121 below and above the hardware for 5 machines which use 11 and 8hp’s.  The 11’s are 318s.  Mine is a 358 which I think is a taller block.  The 121  model uses it’s own mounting hardware.  The other 11’s in the group are 318’s but use a different bracket for some reason.  I think the OH358 is not the same size as the 11’s in the top group so there would be a question of the height and head bolt spacing for the bracket used for those models.  So I’m still unsure if the OH358 can be mounted.
