so can anyone recommend a gas powered straight shaft string trimmer?  I don't want to research this...I just want to go buy a decent one.

I've had a Weedeater SST25 Straight Shaft Line Trimmer for about 5 years now and it has performed well for me. I'd suggest looking at the Stihl or Echo brands as well as I have heard very good reports on both. A little more expensive but supposedly worth the extra $$$. I purchased a new Stihl BR550 Backpack Blower last September and am very glad I spent the extra money as it is a GREAT blower. Outperforms my old McCulloch that I had been using for 15 years by a wide margin.
