axle spur gear position! (rivet heads left or right looking from the operator position?)
Original Message   Mar 27, 2010 5:40 pm
have a model 924050 serial# 066624 and the bearings are bad on the drive axle. i have the axles out and in the process had the spur gear thats splined on both sides fall out that both axles spline into.i now dont know which way the gear faces .there are wear marks with a slight bevel on one end  of all the gear teeth and don't know whether the wear was on the inside or outside of the gear to assemble it .this must be a differential drive gear or something and if i knew which way the round heads of the rivets faced(left or right) it would be helpfull. don't know if it makes a difference or if it only works if installed the corect way. the rivet heads that hold the gear assembly together are on the opposite end of the wear on the teeth.

From the back, rivets to the right.  As I remember after cleaning off the inside of the gear it seemed like it could have gone in either way.  I think the shaft ends/splines are the same also.

if the left bearing had 3/16" play and the right hardly any at all which end of the spur gear would wear the most? i have a noticeable wear pattern on the top outside edge of all the teeth. i'm thinking the wear end of the gear would be furthest away from the left bearing that had all the play in it.that would put the rivets on the left side. if it can be installed either way ? does it matter?

Clean off the gear internal teeth and both shaft ends.  If they are bilaterally symmetrical then it won’t matter which way it goes in as far as the internal teeth go.  Then check the fit with the gear in each way and judge the width and tooth match up.

The machine in the pictures works fine with the gear placed as shown.   Two other differential machines here have the same gear orientation.

can you notice any noticeable wear either right side or left side on the very outer corners of the teeth approx 3/16" long? if you have a wear pattern it would be an indictor which side  the wear on mine should be. either axle will fit in either side of the gear.the gear appears to be identical on both sides when assembled, and wear marks to fit on both sides appear to be identical and the gear fits the same regardless of orientation.

trout. the spur gear placement is solved.after thoroughly examining the wear on the spur gear i figured something had to be causing the teeth to be wearing on the outer edge. the gear is out on the bench waiting for parts, however i slipped it back on the left axle and positioned it back in its approximate place. low and behold there was enough play in the left bearing to cause the right edge of the spur gear to rub against the very outside edge of the large belt pulley that sits in line with the axle shafts.the right side of the spur gear is dead in line with the outside rim of the belt pulley.there is even a  shiny wear ring all around the outside edge of the pully.the gear only can rub on the right side if the bearing is worn and loose.now i can put it back together knowing how it was in there in the first place.
