Craftsman Transaxle Blown apart
Original Message   Feb 15, 2010 9:50 am
The transaxle of my garden tractor blew up. The aluminium casing brake and I can see the gears. I need to replace it but I am not sure if there are other options. The tractor is Model number 917.2575561 Serial number 060194C 004553. I am searching for a replacement, but I have started to wonder if I have other options. Is it possible to swap another transaxle?

I am curious,    what a happed to it?...  It should be repairable..   All you need is a brake down right?

I know that Peerless had breakdowns for all their models..  and all the parts are sold (or were)..

Good Luck,

I am not sure what happened to it. I THINK that there must have been water inside the unit. The water froze and cracked the housing. I can see gears from the outside so the top housing is gone. This is NOT good. I will take the piece off and look at repairing it. I am still interested in an entire unit as it might be worth it to not have more issues

Theres lots of glues on the market theses days to repiar just about anything. If all all thats wrong with it is a crack in the casing without a problem with internals, I for one would go for the repair.

My 3 cents:

I agree with hirschallan. If the problem is just a hole then there is a product called Devcon that is widely available that will do the trick. They have many different products but you are looking for is their aluminium putty. here's a link (no I don't work for them)
http://www.devcon.com/products/products.cfm?market=Maintenance%20%26%20Repair&family=Aluminum%20Putty%20%28F%29
I've seen the local OPE repair guy use it to fill a 2 inch hole in a Tecumseh block.

Cheers
