The transaxle of my garden tractor blew up. The aluminium casing brake and I can see the gears. I need to replace it but I am not sure if there are other options. The tractor is Model number 917.2575561 Serial number 060194C 004553. I am searching for a replacement, but I have started to wonder if I have other options. Is it possible to swap another transaxle?

This site is really excellent, but there are some forums who specialize in Sears garden tractors and it might be worth a look. 

Look at the transaxle in the pictures, I think the main thing you'd have to worry about is the mounting holes.  If you could get one to match up, it might work. 

I did start there, but I did not come up with that part number. I got part number 142608 and then equivalent part 161458. Is the part you sent the same part?

Nope, the part I came up with was  794691

Do a google search for that number... All parts at sears.com or very expensive....

917.x is a Husqvarna built model

I just googled that part number, and it appears Sears is selling this much cheaper than anyone else, although someone is selling this one ebay:

I had the model number wrong 917.257561 (I had an extra 5)

The transaxle is a Dana 4360-82 with 5 speeds

I talked to Sears today and they want close to $500 for a new transaxle (part number 142608 or 161458) and stated that the $215 transaxle is not the correct one.

I have been looking at eBay and some of those seem to be options.  I have a 5 speed, but if a six speed would bolt in I would just not use speed 6.  I use the tractor just for snow blowing so I do not need the higher speeds.

I only paid $500 for the tractor, 42 inch blower and a homemade cab so I do not want to spend too much fixing it. 

If you know the DIRECT bolt-up replacement unit part number (spicer, foote, etc.) please let me know.  The eBay seller wildcat just told me that a spicer 6 speed would work, but I am wnat to be sure.

I am curious,    what a happed to it?...  It should be repairable..   All you need is a brake down right?

I know that Peerless had breakdowns for all their models..  and all the parts are sold (or were)..

I am not sure what happened to it. I THINK that there must have been water inside the unit. The water froze and cracked the housing. I can see gears from the outside so the top housing is gone. This is NOT good. I will take the piece off and look at repairing it. I am still interested in an entire unit as it might be worth it to not have more issues

Theres lots of glues on the market theses days to repiar just about anything. If all all thats wrong with it is a crack in the casing without a problem with internals, I for one would go for the repair.
