changing pully sizes ?

hi everyone, got a question concerning pully sizing..........over on the IH CC forum theres a person that changed a tractor mounted single stage thrower pully from 3.5 inches to 2.5 inches and shows pics of the enormous difference in distances..............is this an accepted method of improving snowthrowers in your opinion?................i was thinking ,after seeing this ,about trying this idea out on my JD tractor mounted thrower but would be concerned about damage that could happen................ any ideas or opinions ? thanks, bill

i havent had the chance to use it yet, but the age of both tractors was close............. i just wanted to know if it would be feasible in case of poor throw distances................ but i dont want to break anything on a vintage tractor or a thrower............ too hard and expensive to find parts for............. thanks again, bill

its only a single but the opening is 33" wide and 16" high........ it has a huge drum auger, same as the cub i saw.......... the difference in distances was from about 6' up a trees trunk to 24' high cable lines................... and it used to throw 15'-20' away , now 35'-40' away................. bill

SkyKing, If you had a 2 stage, I had an Impeller mod that would help a great deal. On the pulleys, I might go from a 3.5 to a 3, should help a lot. On a blower, working in the cold temps, I do not think heat on the bearings would be a problem. Fred

When we were kids... ...my cousin and I changed a pulley size and belt on our Uncle's riding lawnmower to make it go faster... WOW... did it ! But... it blew up after 15 minutes... Taught us a lesson about messing with engineered products... Taught my Uncle a lesson about letting his Nephews use his equipment... Dave...
