Briggs running rich
Original Message   Apr 17, 2008 9:28 am
 Hello all

I have an old 5ph engine off a tiller Engine model 130202. It's running very very rich. I disassembled the carb and cleaned it out with carb cleaner and compressed air.

The only adjustment screw on the side of carb makes no difference what so ever. I screwed it all the way in and completely out with no change at all. It will only run at full throttle but barely above idle. The choke butterfly is straight up & down as it should be.

This engine is new to me so I can't say there aren't other issues with it.

I put a new diaphram & gaskets when I cleaned it.

Any help or ideas?

sounds like you have a vacum leak or govennor problem, when the engine runs does it smoke (black).

I found the problem

On the side of the carb casting that goes down into the bowl in the tank there is/was a hole that appeared to be plugged at one time. I epoxyed it shut and now it runs a litle lean now. Runs good with 1/2 chock. It appeared that it was a steel plug and rusted away. About a 3/32 hole or smaller. I think as I picked away at the rusted plud some got into the main passage behind the pick-up jet. I can live with it.

Is the jet pressed in? No way to remove it to get at the debree.
