1979 toro snow thrower , constant gas smell
Original Message   Jan 11, 2005 8:40 pm
Hello gents,
Got a 1980 8/26 toro snowthrower. This season, it constanly smells of gas . Have it stored in the garage and the smells is always there. Closed the gas valve and let her runs till she runs no more to burn all the gas in the carb, but still smmells and has small leak.I think it is coming from the choke pin and or the carb ,refering to the diagram at the toro site,

Any suggestions, sorry if I'm not too specific , Thanks a bunch

Things to check:

In addition to you're suggestion,

Gas tank, many plastic ones will develope small cracks.
Gas Cap and cap vent.
Gas lines and where they connect.
Smell your oil just to make sure there's no gas smell from it.
Gasket where the carb is mounted.

Toroman - if your fuel valve is off & you are sure you have gas leaking at the carb, then you have TWO PROBLEMS. Firstly, your fuel shutoff valve is NOT stopping fuel flow completely & should be replaced (the valve itself could be leaking). The other problem is most likely a stuck or punctured float.
