Honda Engine Icing up..
Original Message   Feb 18, 2008 4:48 pm
Can someone please post a picture of a Honda blower with that "Carb Icing" kit installed, or something home-made that works? I recently repowered an older machine with an 11 HP Honda, and it runs great until the carb freezes. When it's bitter cold, it's fine. When it's warmer, it's fine. Dusty snow seems to "condense", for lack of a better term, and then freeze on the outside of the carb, keeping the linkages from moving. I can't throttle down once the driveway's done, or when it plugs up.. I like to let any air cooled engine idle for a couple of mins before I shut it off. It's a pain, and not exactly a safety feature :-)

Just looking for a picture or two to base a home remedy off of. Thanks very much.

John

JohnnyBoy:

What you need to do is build a shroud around the carb side of the engine to capture some engine heat.   If you can house a portion of the muffler (not the open exhaust) and share that with the carb you should be able to sufficiently heat the carb.  With some imagination, haywire, a big coffee can  or two and a pair of tin snips you should be able to get the job done.   Are you using an air filter?  You might want to take it off for the winter and put a piece of nylon stocking over the mouth of the carb to keep snow out.
