8 hp tecumsech carb flooding
Original Message   Dec 2, 2007 5:20 am
hi l have 8 hp tecumsech snowblower and the carb is flooding out. basically l pulled the carb apart cleaned it and installed a kit which didnt work. lve cleaned the fuel tank and replaced the fuel line going from the tank  to the carb becuase l was getting some little pieces of dirt (rubber) in the floot bowl, the floot was replaced as well. l can take the carb off the engine and blow in the inlet and cant get even the slightest leak. so l put the carb back on the engine open the fuel nozzel to the carb and fuel starts leaking right out venturi but not every time sometimes you have run for about 30 secs then it starts to flood doesnt make sense ? l had 10hp tecumech a few years back whith excat problem end up replacing carb with used one and it fixed the problem         just wondering if anybodys ran in this problem or has any suggestions

kinda answering my own question just thought l let you know.

l was talking to an old friend of mine and he gave me a tip that has seemed to fix my flooding carb problem. the spring that joins the needle to the floot bowl, the open end of the spring must face towards air filter side or (front of engine) aparently it wont sit centre if its towards the engine side.

hopefully this can help somebody

Tecumseh Carb Floods

Tecumseh carbs are prone to flooding (or leaking) because they are gravity fed.  If the float valve seat or float goes bad, they'll start leaking gas on your garage floor.  This can also be caused by a gummed up carb, but look carefully at the float and valve seats when you disassemble the carb.  Newer "float bowl" type B&S carbs are using the same Viton valve seat, so this can be applicable there, too.  A bad seat can also cause fuel starvation.  ONE of the signs of a bad seat is the needle action being spongy or sticky.

Here's an unusually clean Tecumseh carb stripped and ready for a float valve seat replace.  The Tecumseh needle and seat  part number is 631021.  But before you do this, check the float.  If the float rattles when shook, it means that the float has sunk and will need to be replaced or repaired.  When I say "sunk" I mean that it has sprung a leak and is letting gas (or water) inside it, which makes it float less or not at all.

The Viton seat is down set at the bottom of the fuel inlet.  I use a small wood screw to pull them out.

Here's the new seat ready to be pushed in by "an appropriately sized drift" (in this case a bolt).  The side with the ring should face into the gas flow.  Usually they're white, but this aftermarket seat is red.

Push it down and seat it.

Rule of thumb says the float should be level after assembly.

to set float - use an 11/64" drill bit to attain the measurement between the float and carb body -...............  DI
