No reverse on White 10/28
Original Message   Oct 1, 2007 9:59 pm
My wife bought me a used white 10/28 snow blower, the unit works great but when you put in reverse the unit goes forward instead of backwards. The friction wheel moves to the left when put into reverse as it should so I'm wondering if the rubber ring needs replacing or is it something more serious.

thanks

Nope.

If the friction wheel needed to be replaced then you wouldn't have forward as well.

The way the wheel works is that it rubs against a large diameter disk. When the wheel is at the outside perimeter of the disk you go fast, if you are close to the centre you go slow. If you move the wheel so that it goes past the centre then you go in reverse. It sounds like the linkage that moves the wheel needs to be tightened up or at least adjusted, it isn't moving the wheel past the centre point of the disk and hence you keep going forwards.

The traction control leaver ( not the "gear shift") causes the friction wheel to pivot against the friction disk. If you let go of the leaver the wheel should automatically move away from the disk thereby disengaging the motor. Whether it works or not is independent of the speed selection process. If the traction control doesn't work then its probably an adjustment problem with the associated linkage. That is not the same as the linkage for the speed selection mechanism which is a different set of leavers.
