Original Message   Feb 14, 2007 2:37 pm
This is my second season with my ARIENS 7524 and I did leave gas in the tank from last year and she won't start.I drained the gas tank and also put a little fresh gas to rinse the tank and then put fresh gas back in but she still does not start.Next I'm going to remove the carb bowl.Hope this helps.Any advice will be GREATLY......

did you try with the choke off?  i had a bugger of a time starting my 926DLE last night (even pulled out the electric starter power cord) until i tried with the choke off.  even in -20C, it ran fine without the choke - never expected that.

I tried with and without the choke and yes, even used the electric start for the first time since it started on the first or second pull every time last year so go figure.

I've done the following things that caused starting problems:

  1. Throttle in the "Off" position;
  2. Ignition switch not in;
  3. Fuel cut off valve in the "Off" position
  4. Bad ( Old) gas;
  5. Didn't notice oil leak, engine threw a rod through the crankcase, didn't notice until I tried starting it and it "sounded funny";
  6. Forgot to reconnect the spark plug after doing maintenance -- Duh;
  7. No gas --- Really Duh.

Aside from thos I can't think of anything.

Hirsch - after you hit the primer a few times, does the engine at least try to start?

If not: Make sure the ignition key is on, or inserted on a Tecumseh (RED plastic key). Make sure the fuel valve is OPEN.

The float could be stuck. You could try tapping on the carb bowl lightly with a screwdriver. However, if this cures it, rest assured the problem will resurface at a later date.

The engine should at least sputter or run briefly on the fuel from the primer. I suspect a stuck float and/or needle. If you tilt the machine on the auger rakes & secure it overhead with a strap, you can access the carb bowl without removing the heat shield tin box. This may also keep the parts from just falling out, but there is still a chance they might fall. Have a can of carb cleaner, a small wire & rags handy. Run the wire thru the bowl nut holes & thru the tube that is ABOVE the bowl nut in the carb body. Clean everything well with carb cleaner.

Let us know how you make out...

Before I logged on today I tried spraying carb cleaner into the choke end of the carb while it was cranking with the electric starter and it started only on the the little bit and then quit so I did it a second time and the same thing happened.Then I logged on and read all threads on the topic and MARTY'S tap tap on the carb worked.PERFECTO. I could not have done it without you guys.KEEP IT UP
