I did an IP search/hunt to find the town he lives in, found the nearest HD & bought it our from under him

Nibbler - how about using something like these to attach the tractor half with the auger half? 
Use one spring clip to hold the clevis pin to the tractor half. Slide the 2 sections together, and using washers & a second spring clip, secure the two. Use the biggest clevis pins & spring clips you can find. Marty
