Here's a new thing to check when your engine won't idle and surges.
I just got done doing my neighbor's driveway, when my engine began running funny. I checked the fuel cap to make sure the vent wasn't restrricted, I knew I had good gas because it was treated. So I restarted it and went down the block (4 houses) to do my cousin's sidewalk and driveway. Then I did my other two neighbors' sidewalks.
This morning I wanted to clean up the rest of back yard, but the engine was running worse.. I started poking around the carb and found the only thing holding the carb to the engine was the carb cover where primer & throttle lever are mounted. The gasket (I think it uses one) and both carb mounting bolts were missing. When I get the bolts I think I will get some nylon locking nuts
This was a on a 5 year old 824 Ariens.
