70's Gilson snowblower -ignition coil and unitrol transmission

Hi,
I am in need of a new ignition coil for my snowblower with Briggs 7hp motor and have a few questions. I understand that right now I am using a magnetron ignition system with points and condenser. However, I have seen coils advertised as "solid state" that are supposed to be more reliable. Is this something that I can just switch out with my magnetron ignition system, or do I need other parts?
Also, I am going to start working on the transmission tonight but I need a few ideas. When I first got the snowblower, 1st and 2nd gears worked along with reverse. 3rd gear would just slip and not move the blower. Now, I am lucky if 1st gear even works. Please let me know what I should be looking for.
Thanks in advance. Tom

I have checked out the site, it's loaded with info indeed. But it doesn't say anything about upgrading the ignition. I need to know what I would need to upgrade the ignition and if it would be worth it on a 30 year old machine. Also, how do I set the timing on the points system? Thanks, Tom

If you bring your old coil to a Briggs dealer they should be able to match it up to an electronic coil and you won't need the points anymore.
