ARIENS JERKING IN !ST GEAR UPDATE
Original Message   Dec 30, 2005 9:07 am
Tom asked me to better identify my snowblower. Model 910926, tractor 910995,serial 045776. I believe this is a 1971 Ariens. When I depress the clutch it compleatly disengages and the unit comes to a compleat stop.  When I release the clutch she's off and running no slippage. That is except in 1st gear (when I can get it in) and then it  just jerks along. When I am able to get it into 1st, usually by shifting from a higher gear back down to 1st, it pulls fine. I can get it into 1st gear ok , no binding or anything like that, it's just that some times she rolls right along but most of the time it jerks along. I can never go from neutral into 1st without it then jerking along. It's like the friction disk is touching , then not touching, then touching etc. although when I do catch 1st it preforms fine. What do you think?  Thanks,   richb

richb,
That eliminates the units that require squeezing the clutch handle to disengage the drive. A link to a scan of an old repair manual page is below. That should clear up some questions. Let me know when you have downloaded it, so I can dump it from the server to save space.

Also check to see if the friction disk slips into the "hole" in the center of the drive disk. Parts may be worn enough to require some adjustment of the shift linkage.
