I inherited an old snowthrower from my dad.

It is an ariens model 924044. He dates it back in the late 70's or early 80's. I have been able to find some parts for the 10HP Techumsa motor, but am now having fuel issues. It will idle just fine, and run all day long. but as soon as i get a load of snow in the chute, it bogs down badly.

I am used to working on jeep carbs, but never a snowblower carb. I recently put a carb rebuild through it, but cannot figure out how to properly adjust the carb so it does not bogg down under a load.

Also there is a set of 3 wires (red/green/black) comming from the motor into a black plug, we suspected it was for a elec. start, but i recently purchased one, and did not use this plug. I am wondering if it is possible to power a light/headlights from this plug. I cannot find any info on techumsa's website on this engine breakdown that has these wires in the pic.

Jon - I'll start with the easy question first. Your snowblower does not have an alternator. There was no room for one on an engine with points/condensor which I bet yours is. That black plug is most likely for ignition shutoff & safety switches.

For the carb - there are 2 mixture adjusting screws. The one on the bottom of the carb "bowl" is for high speed - to get a ballpark setting, tighten it GENTLY until it lightly bottoms out, then back it out 1 and a half turns. There is another that mounts horizontally in the carb's middle with a spring around it - thats the idle mixture screw, ballpark setting is also turn in gently until it bottoms & back out 1 turn. Try & start it up & fiddle with the high speed screw to see if you can get it running well. If you succeed, then idle it down & adjust the idle screw if needed. Now accelerate the engine & see if it rises smoothly - if not, turn the IDLE screw in a 1/4 turn. If you still have lean fuel problems, check the float setting - which means you should consider rebuilding the carb. If you can rebuild a Jeep carb, this is a snap. Get the engine numbers off the flywheel shroud & get a carb kit. We'll guide you...

excelent place to start. We did do the carb rebuild, and that is were we screwed something up. While snowblowing yesterday i tried adjusting the mixture screws ( i found 3 :the one on the bottom of the bowl. a small screw 1/4 way up from the bottom, and another most of the way up the carb). I adjust all 3 bit by bit, it runs GREAT, but then only boggs while under heavy snow load.

I visited my local dealer today, and he said it might needs a points/condenser. I guess i can test that with an in-line spark tester.. if the light fades when under snow load, that would point out a bad points/condener

Jon - That screw at the top of the carb controls the low speed (idle) throttle setting - it has no effect whatsoever on fuel mixture. Try a new spark plug before diving into the ignition - it cures most bad running problems. Next, try putting a load on the engine (blow some snow if possible) with the choke on 1/4 to 1/2 closed - if it runs better, then you have a fuel problem. If not, then ignition or low compression are possibilities. If you have a compression gauge, take a reading. You can check the spark with a tester & see if it lightens under load. I use a few internet places for parts, but I like Outdoor Distributors - they have fantastic customer service!

Uh, this may be simplistic but maybe you're feeding it too much snow.

You mentioned it boggs down under heavy snow load, that 's a very "flexible" term. If you're asking it to do too much work a slower speed would help. If the engine revs up when it comes under load, throws snow  and then bogs down as the load increases it could be that you're going too fast for the machine. Wet snow can also be a problem.

and as far as going to fast/or heavy snow, it was neither. Light fluffy stuff only about 5" deep. This type of storm was NOTHING for this machine last year. So i don't believe i was overloading it. Only in speed 1 of 5 as well. Last year this machine was a powerhouse, nothing could slow it down..
