I recently purchased a used honda HS35 snowthrower, the engine runs well but

it does not propel the snow through the chute well.what can cause that.

I would first  check the auger belt tension. You may have an idler pulley to make such an adjustment. If your belt is old, it may be worn out or stretched and may need replacement. Make sure your engine is operating at full recommended RPMs.  Please keep your fingers away from chute and auger so we can see your replies!!!.

If the belt tension is ok, then the rubber auger paddles need to be replaced...
