Hello I hope one of the experts can help me. We have a Toro snowblower 7/24 Model 38050 that we bought new back in 1981 I believe. It has been a work horse all these years and almost problem free until now. It leaks gas from the carb BUT I can stop the leak by using the shut off valve.

 I did the following: I replaced  the inlet needle - seat- clip and clip, float and also a new gasket around the bowl. Well it still LEAKS gas.

 I gave up on it for now and just wondering if anyone has any ideas. Maybe I installed the new seat in wrong? I made sure it went up all the way is that right? I cannot see anything else that would cause  this problem unless I have the wrong parts in??? I used a kit 631920 for the inlet assmb'ly.  Anytthoughts would be most helpful, I still can use it but will have to use the shutoff after I finish each time.

Ray - the float setting is not achieved with a screw. I think the one you are turning is a mixture screw. To adjust the float properly, the carb must be removed & turned upside down. Then you put an 11/64" drill bit on the opposite side of the float hinge, between the upper bowl area where the gasket is & the float itself . The top of the float should just touch the drill bit for the proper setting. I think thats your problem.

Thanks Marty, that makes alot of sense. I did put the mixture screw back to where it was and it does run normal,  just that leak problem that I use the shut off to stop.

I would think that the "seat" does not go all the way up but is the part that gets moved (up or down" to make the proper float adjustment, am I understanding you correctly? Also because this is a 25 year old machine I am concerned about breaking a bolt  to take the carb off. 

The local shop wants 40.00 Pick up & re-delivery and then he also said about 75-100 to reapair the leak. That does not count a carb if needed because of the machine age.  This is why I decided to do it myself, and I did take the bowl off about 6 years ago when sediment caused blockage, fixed it and it did not leak and work until this problem.

The other concern was that  clip. it seems to come off to easily.

Just some quick suggestions if this a tecumseh engine. First, make sure the carb is clean. The seat described here, is put in wrong. Rings must be faced down first, and smoothside is for the inlet needle.Check float even if new, for leaks, adjust  float with a 11/64 inch drill bit.Put spring on with the pointed end towards the choke, yes, it's suppose to be lose.Float bowl cutout, should be on the inside towards the engine parallel with the float post . this makes sure that the float is able to drop in the bowl far enough to allow the fuel  to enter the carb. Make sure the bowl is vented , if plugged , this will cause the carb to flood. Was there any water in the carb and froze? if so you may have a small hair line crack somewhere causing the leak. It's usually and easy fix, keep working at it you'll get it working right.I hope this helps .

Thanks to ALL for trying to help me with this leak problem!!!!  I gave up until it gets warmer, I did try to adjust the float with a 11/64 drill bit as explained (thank you) but must be off a little yet as it still leaks, I can use it but have to use the shut off.  I don't want to attempt to take the carb off as after 25 years I am concerned about snapping a bolt, so I have been trying to adjust with the carb on. I know not a good idea!!!  When it gets warmer and I can get some help I will try again,  BUT at least I know what is wrong!!  I checked the price on a new one a 8/26 and it goes for 999.99.......will get this one fixed!!!

I find it hard to believe you'll snap the bolts.They aren't as tight as you may think. Use the proper fitting tools and you'll be amazed how easy that comes loose.

In my Tecumseh manual  it says that the ring side of the seat should be up into the carb and the smooth side is where the needle seats . Page 26  figure 29  manual 692509 ? Majorxlr8n wrote:

Thanks guys - I checked my manual & the seat SHOULD be installed with the "rings" side inserted FIRST. I doubt thats the problem, as I have installed them upside down & the float still seats ok...

I just get concerned about snapping the bolt or bolts as it is 25 years with not being taken off.  But will give it a try when it get warmer.

I lost my original manual for this toro 7/26, Model 38050, I see that some of you have the manual? Any way if I pay for a copy would someone be kind enough to make me a copy?? It would help  so much, I have all my other ones but a few years back I think it was moved in the garage and I have been searching ever since.

Ray - go to www.toro.com & have your model & serial numbers handy. Sometimes they're free, but if not they are cheap. I have a link for a Tecumseh manual that I will PM to you later when I get to work (I don't have it handy)
