1 ton of snow a minute?
Original Message   Jan 5, 2005 6:10 pm
Average snowfall is approximately 6 lbs per cubic foot, so, if there is a foot of snow on the ground & you have a 12" auger & 24" wide housing, you would need to go clear 166 feet in 60 seconds.

How many of you have been clearing 1 ton of snow a minute without even knowing it?

I know I have not been clearing a ton of snow in 1 minute. That does not sound right to me.

Toro 1128 specs state that you're INDEED clearing 2,200lbs a minute. I would assume that the Ariens being a bit faster moving, MAY do more

I often wonder how they calculate the lbs/min rate. The Toro 1128 as you said is rated at 2200 lbs/min. Weighing in at 257 lbs. and having an 11 hp engine it is a big machine.

Going over to the single stage units the 2450 weighs 74 lbs. and has a 5 hp engine. This is rated at 1700 lbs/min. I would have expected a larger difference.

My guess would be that it has nothing to do with weight of the snowblower but how much snow it is capable of bringing in and discharging?

You know I used to be so impressed with figures like that but now I think it is just marketing smoke and mirrors. If you pay attention to a snowblower, single or two stage, that is functioning properly they all move a lot of snow, heck even my old little Toro single given the right amount of snow and conditions moves a lot of snow.

Remember this, snow carries a different amount of weight depending on how much moisture content or how "wet" it is. This type of snow is much heavier than the white fluffy stuff but may be signifantly less of it but is is working man and machine much harder than say light stuff at twice the height. See what I mean?

I don't place a lot of "weight" pardon the pun on these figures. To be honest they ALL move a lot of snow....thats what makes them all so fun....

Jogo,

How's the condition up there, I won't be back until Saturday & was wondering how much is on the ground there & what's it going to be like in a few days.

I just had the Simplicity 1170E out and cleared my house and my neighbor's. It was a fairly wet 4 inches of wet snow....seemed like it weighed a ton. The machine blew it into the next county.......

My experience has been that when I'm shovelling snow, each shovelfull weighs a ton. Doesn't matter how fast you go.

It's mostly wet now temps above freezing. We had about 3" when I got up this A.M. at 5:00 to snow blow, I have to be at work at 6. Once sun cam up most roads were only left with slush, then it rained all day ...still raining.

Jogo,

With luck it'll all be gone by Saturday otherwise I'll probably be dealing with a sheet of ice. Waited all htis time to use that snowblower & then not around when it finally snows. Oh well....

By the way, did you trade in your 1128 for the new 11528? I remember you had the 1128 last year. The 11528 is this year's model.
