Sandford and Son's Latest find in snowblowers.
Original Message   Jul 30, 2005 12:36 pm
Everytime i get in my old beat up pickup to go look at some ope my wife starts to hum the theme to Sandford and son.  For those of you that are to young to know this tune just watch TVLAND and you will hear it. Today i picked up a couple of FREE snowblowers. The first is a 7hp techumseh Jari 2 stage dual auger that has been weathered pretty bad. It has no spark at all. Any suggestions on what to look for ? The bolts are very rusty so taking it apart wont be fun. The second is a Very very clean Toro single stage with a Briggs engine. Starts on the first pull and runs strong. Looks like it has no miles on it whatsoever. The only problem with it is that the solid tires are pealing from themselves. Any tips on where i could find such an old tire ? They look to be bonded to the rim so i think im out of luck on this one. I was thinking of using some type of epoxy and trying to glue them on ?? Thought i would post some pic's for you

Great finds "Fred"!! Tell Grady & Lamont to clean 'em up & put 'em in the yard!!  My wife & I also begin humming the Sanford Song too whenever I go out on a quest for OPE!

That Jari looks like a THREE stage? The chute mechanism looks interesting - does the whole impeller drum rotate? I would first replace the spark plug, then check/replace the points & condensor for your lack of spark problem. If epoxying the Toro's tires doesn't work, try Ebay for some used wheel/tire combos.

Again, nice going!

Marty,

The barrel spins just like the snowbirds when you turn the chute. I have never played with the points or condenser on a techumseh before. Any tips on how i access them ?

What is the easiest  way to get at them ? Should i try and clean the points with sand paper or just replace both point and condenser with new ?

I tried a new plug but still no spark.

I will let you know how i make out.

I searched the web for the wheels/tires for the toro with no luck.

Thanks again.

I figured it out. Pulled the flywheel with my puller and replaced the

condenser and points. Put a little gas in the plug hole replaced the plug and it started on the first pull.

ran for a few seconds and sounded good. tomorrow i will put a rebuild kit in the carb, a new gas line and then start the detailing.

I will keep ya posted.

Carb is rebuilt , New gas line installed. Runs strong , eveything seems to function as should with no strange noises. Next step is to clean and detail the beast. I will post before and after pics when i finish.

That is a stock original paint job on the Jari. The teeth and eyes are factory decals. I might just clean the bucket and leave it as is but if i decide to paint it i will tape off the decals so not to deface the cool look.

Well, i decided to just clean up the machine instead of a complete paint job.

Seeing that i had the covers off the engine so i could do the points i decided to give them a coat of paint. but the body i left alone.

i also painted the handlebars black and the rims as well.

it does have some surface rust but nothing major at all. here is a pic. this thing runs like new. nice and smooth.

I can see the difference.  You might not see the scraped paint when the unit is actually throwing the snow.
